Although it does take a 6 month clearance and background check done by police. Can't own automatic and most if not all semi auto isn't allowed. Gun ranges are allowed to have whatever, I've personally shot guns you can't own at home but can own and store at the range to only be used at the range. Since port arther it's been that way. Our gun crimes are a million times less than of the USA, if the laws weren't introduced it would be much worse. Nowadays most people who'd wield a gun has a knife instead. So most likely to be stabbed than shot. That doesn't mean gun crime doesn't happen in Australia it definitely does.

My dad at the time owned a SKS semi auto with well over 3000 rounds from Afghanistan in the early 80s when he went in the navy.

I’m Chinese served in Australia, got a bolt action rifle too and before covid we used to hunt a lot, the worst was wild mature boars, these things are big, i bled it with salt so we can have blood pudding, gutted it, put it on a 4by4 to the farmers house and he will help us carve it up, great times
