Thoroughly enjoyed the Fummins build series by the way.

Gotta love the old CP3 harmonic knock on the common rail cummins. Also, rough ride is definitely because of the wheel tire combo, not enough sidewall to dampen the road out.

I'm honestly so excited for the fummins to be back. I'm sure getting a newer dodge will be more comfortable, and maybe a little better at towing. But seeing this beast, which you built and is unique to you makes me happy

Ditch the wheel tire combo for taller sidewall and a much softer ride and tinker with the other nuances until sorted is my vote. Give the interior a refresh for really comfortable seats and a modern sound system. But if you go with something else I totally dig the manual trans idea. Drivers drive, its what we do.

I vote -- keep the fumminns. Driving a 6 speed towing sounds fun but also like it'd get old after a while on a 20 hour trip. Put as many creature comforts as you can -- backup cameras, refurbed interior pieces. Bigger turbo if needed.

While the semi wheels add a unique and eye-catching touch to the Fummins, I can understand why some might think it would ride better without them. It's always interesting to see different opinions on vehicle modifications and their impact on performance. I'm curious to see how the Fummins performs after its restoration. Keep up the great work! 👍🔧🚚

I like the Fummins but I do think a cummins truck would be a good move. Keep up the great content.

I think you guys should run through the upgrades on the Fummins. Build it up clean it up and upgrade it to what you want and give it try. Do some sound deadening, maybe look into suspension upgrades, and see if you can make it what you want. If it doesn’t work out then look into a 6 speed Cummins dodge truck

Best upgrade I did to my 2500 Ram was soft ride coils up front. Night and day difference. Rides great and tows exactly the same. Also best way to fix the auto trans issues would be a G56 swap. Would be cool to see you keep that truck and manual swap it.

I'd keep and modify the fummins tbh. As a big truck guy that truck is also way cooler. But on a practical note, you built it and know the truck better than anything. I would do the manual nv4500 swap, and it would be bulletproof. Loosing the center console kind of sucks, but see if you can find someone to build you a custom center console to keep your cup holders etc instead of going back to the old style.

maybe a shock upgrade and different wheel tire combo it will ride better. the wheels look good but most of the time less rubber means less ride comfort. loud exhaust and big tires are cool until you do a 20hr road trip

Bilstein dampers and a higher profile tyre will make the truck much more liveable on a long drive. Add in some air springs, and fix the brakes with the transmission tune up will make it a much more pleasent drive.
Good thing with the cummins is that parts are readily avaliable and there's plenty of aftermarket support to eliminate the issues and add more refinement to it with a new turbo and exhaust system that's not quite so loud.

If I was gonna keep the fummins I'd definitely go through and do some proper sound deadening like second skin luxury liner pro and whatever their dynamat equivalent is called. Would make it quieter than the new truck if done well

  • Bought2Build
    Bought2Build 4 місяці тому

I’d definitely sell the new truck..
i like how easy the fummins is to work on and you know every piece of it and that is a huge bonus. I don’t think it is all that far from being perfect.
But it would be a tough call cuz I am a L5P duramax guy but personally with those choices I would be looking for a Cummins dually with stick shift and engine brake and be good to go!!
I do like the fummins tho

  • Nathan Titus
    Nathan Titus 4 місяці тому

A bigger turbo might do a hair better but it’s going to have more lag aswell! If you just want a good towing setup throw a s475 over that stock turbo in a compound setup and it will tow like a dream!

  • Jbaccord
    Jbaccord 4 місяці тому

For me the new truck isn’t an option like you said cause the warranty shit but I definitely think you should keep the fummins, being as you know every single little thing on it makes it so easy to diagnose and fix and to even have spare parts that you know wear out quick

  • Sutton
    Sutton 4 місяці тому +56

I agree with everyone on the wheels. They look amazing, but to make the truck feel way more comfortable and useable, put some factory 17” wheels on it with factory size tires and it’ll tow and drive significantly better.
Also, a large muffler and resonator for the exhaust would make it significantly more comfortable in the cab.

  • DankenstineOfficial
    DankenstineOfficial 4 місяці тому

I think serviceability of the fummins is the move. You already have the experience on it. I think converting to manual would be worth it as well. The noise and ride quality issues could be fixed with dynamat and air ride.

  • BILL FERRIS

Nice truck, I'd definitely try a transmission tuner, the cummins has a different powerband than the PS. I'd also bag it, do the sound deadening and pull the belt off & spin the waterpump & tensioner pulleys, mine the waterpump had a tight spot you could feel when turning it by hand.

  • That_Lifted _Minivan
    That_Lifted _Minivan 4 місяці тому

Honestly, I love the 6 speed Cummins idea, but the fummins is already there and just run what you have (save money mainly) but the few mods I would suggest to the fummins is, ARP head studs, injectors, bigger turbo, a second gen manifold swap and build an actual box for the cold air intake to help keep intake temps down (also, make sure your valves/rocker arms are adjusted properly)

  • Ron Safranic
Ron Safranic 4 місяці тому +28

I think you overlooked another option. You can make the Fummins much quieter by stripping out the interior (and possibly the dash) and installing some kind of sound deadening (Maybe more than one kind). You like to tinker and it would make a good video!

I might be a little biased because I just loved watching the whole fummins build series. Nobody else on UAclips has a better build series on this type of build than you. That being said, i feel like the fummins has so much more potential and I’d love to see you improve it and make it the ultimate towing rig it was originally intended to be. Yeah the 6 speed manual newer Cummins would be a sweet setup, but me personally would find it quite annoying sitting in heavy traffic trying to tow in a manual if you encounter that situation.

  • NotYourTypicalHeli
    NotYourTypicalHeli 4 місяці тому

Personally I love how the Fummins looks, the road presence is awesome. It would be expensive and work but I think going to an air ride rear suspension setup would solve all the comfort problems. Then the 6.4 generation trucks still came in manual, therefore you’d just need some interior bits from a manual one and a G56 out of a similar year cummins. Big turbo, 6 speed cummins in a big beauty F350 on the semi wheels with air ride. Even if it wasn’t the most comfortable rider, it definitely would be the coolest. Also depending on how deep down the hole you wanna go, if you converted to the new sync radio you could still use all your trailer upgrades.

  • tbaker667
    tbaker667 4 місяці тому

I am probably commenting on this a bit late, but, I would keep the Fummins, put a compound turbo on it and throw a Allison transmission in it. The compounds would help performance across the range, the manual swap is cool until you get in heavy traffic, or driving through big cities. I would stay auto, and put a best of class transmission in it.

  • Retro Gamer

One note on the which truck debate. The downside with upgrading the fummins is I need it to tow with. So I can’t have it down for a long period of time and do everything I want. So it makes it a bit trickier to do what I want to do. Would have to do it in short stages. And get over the worry of an issue every time.

For what you're doing, 4th gen cummins dually with a 6spd is probably the best bet. Unless the tuning of trans fix's the shift issue. The wheels and tires play a big role on ride quality but air suspension would make it feel better as well

lol it feels so good to see you just drive that truck how i felt it should have been. Need to do mild tow centric fuel system upgrades and like a sxe363 for a turbo. tune the transmission and see if that gets it smoothed out. get a trans built from square one for your setup if it doesn't work. Can get manual torque lockup switch and manual shifter over ride for those transmissions from BD diesel so it works with engine brakes

I'm happy to see the Fummins back in action. I had watched a couple of your videos here and there, but the Fummins build is what really got me into your channel. And I'm not gonna lie, I kinda fell off watching your videos recently, and now that the Fummins is back so am I. I'm invested in your content again. I don't really know why, I like drifting and fast cars more than trucks, content-wise and in real life, but there's just something about this Fummins build that keeps me coming back for more.
Edit: I guess a manual trans dodge build would be cool. I know they also have a lot more issues with front end parts, tie rod ends, ball joints, that sorta thing. I worked with a dude a few years ago who had just bought a nice dodge, like a 2016, which at the time was only a year old and still under warranty. And he said every time he took it in for service it cost him a thousand dollars every time. So there's that. But I think that if I were in your shoes I would just continue building the Fummins. Yeah, there might be some challenges, but you have already put so much time and effort into that truck. And it's such a cool, custom build. There's a million manual transmission dodge's, there aren't too many Fummins. And the Fummins is going to give you more content in the long run because with the dodge you're just going to build the engine and slap some wheels on it. You can do whatever you want with the Fummins. And while it is more fun to drive a manual transmission, if you were ever to build the engine to over 1000 horsepower a built automatic transmission would hold up better than a manual. And if the 2020 is still under warranty I would keep it. Continue using that to tow your trailer while you build the Fummins into the ultimate long distance tow pig, and sell it when the Fummins is a complete, polished build that doesn't need any more upgrades or bugs worked out.

Thieves usually won't take anything that draws too much attention (plain black trailers are a dime a dozen and no one pays attention to them)!
Keep the Fummins, convert to air ride with ALL new suspension bushings, put in a built tranny with a good tune and a turbo matched to how you plan to use it 90% of the time.

Recent bought a very low mileage 2005 7.3 here in Australia because I'm sick of all of the electronic crap. Just doing upgrades to transmission to overcome any upcoming issues when towing. It's amazing how down here the price of the 7.3 is holding and for immaculate examples are going up.

I’d be on the side of keeping the fummins, Manual is awesome till it’s stop and go traffic. You already know the fummins inside and out just take the time make her 100% and never worry again. What I’d do to the fummins is get a smaller diameter set of Alcoa’s they have a Vgt controller with a engine brake on it. Ford has a better interior than dodge I think ford will be more comfortable In every aspect. As down to driving knowing what it’s doing so stress level is down anc the comfort level of interior is better so physically you’re more comfortable.

There is many things you can do to improve your fummins , stock wheels and tyres/tires will improve the ride considerably , better shocks maybe , sound deadening kit , quieter exhaust , as for a stick shift , in traffic and 6 hour plus road trips it gets old very quickly - if you have a box you can shift with out using the clutch like a fuller/eaton (only need the clutch for pulling away/reversing/maneuvering)that can work , but an auto shifter or auto box is a lot easier .( European cars/light/heavy trucks petrol(gas) or diesel use manual boxes with twin plate clutches and auto shifts , not many use traditional auto boxes with torque converters) , You drive to events, compete and drive home , you need as stress free a trip as possible so stick to auto . A later up grade you could do to the fummins is swap the 5.9 for a 6.7 cummins , instant power and torque increase if the ford box can take it , one for the future maybe !,

If I was in your position, I would take the time and effort to make the Fummins work. If you do consider the RAM, remember that there are 2 automatic transmission options. The 68RFE gets a bad rap, but is solid in a fairly stock scenario. If you go with an HO version of the engine, you get the Aisin transmission. (That'll be my next truck purchase.)

Agree with most, super excited to see the fummins back! The ride would dramatically increase with smaller wheels and better, less aggressive tires, but its hard to beat the semi wheels :(

You should find a higher trim level mega cab dually and do a king bed conversion on it so it will ride smoother and you have more room in the can and the back seats can recline some for your passengers but you also get the long bed you want and then sell the ford

I used DCS to try and tune my 5r100 but didn’t like it at all, went with the Blessed tune 6.0 mildly raised trans shift points and love it! I’ve got a 24 valve ppump conversion swap with a custom 1600 low stall converter.

A Cummins would be fun, if I remember right I think that manual had a lower tow capacity, don’t really remember. But to have the best of both worlds, there are many conversion kit for putting the 6spd auto Allison trans into a Cummins truck. So you can have a Cummins and a Allison transmission, and that might still have you exhaust or engine break.

I would also check all grounds on the truck. I have a 2001 dodge cummins (i know its not the same thing) but it does similar weird shifting issues if the grounds aren’t good but if i clean the grounds and make sure the negative cables are tight then the weird surging goes away

De-chrome that front end, add a 17-22 front bumper - cherry! Also, if you swap in a Dodge 6-speed transmission they’ll fit with that existing floor pan. The Ford ZF6 will need the larger pan

@Taylor Ray he's right, Will definitely help. Just like the piping, u seen results instantly. Sound deadening will help ALOT! Maybe a sponsor will help out.
Covering the Transmission tunnel, pillars, inside doors, etc.
I've noticed a difference on my car when I did the underbody rubberized spray & cavity wax inside its sub-frames
being full frame, spraying it would help- Plus it's protectant.
I see a bunch of content coming on the fummins! Cant wait.

Definitely sell the fummins and get a Ram with the 6 speed! I have a 2014 3500 4x4 dually with the 6 speed manual and its absolutely my favorite truck ive ever had! The thing is an absolute beast. Its deleted and tuned and aftermarket turbo. Highly recommend. And stay with a 2013 and up. The interior is nicer and more comfortable.

So I love this build. That gen of Ford one tons is one of my favorites. And then add what you’ve done I know you’d make it better if you kept it. But something about a factory Cummins with a factory manual in a factory dodge is screaming at me. There’s a reason there’s sooo many dang of them older Dodges out there still towing. They’re just good freaking trucks man. Either way I know you’ll end up with a dope truck so.

For the radiators and intercoolers, it might be worth the time investment to custom fab some shrouds. Shrouds will be wonders to direct the air where it needs to be and aide in where it is directed in the engine bay. But also, get ride of wheel and tire combo if this is truly a tow rig.

A little late, but when washing your vehicles, go foam cannon on dry panels. If you wash with water first, it could scratch. If you go foam first, the foam will trap dirt in foam. if real bad, do a pre rinse with foam wash off, then refoam.

Definitely the Fummins. Its paid off, you know it inside and out and the gripes that you have with it are easily fixed.
Regarding the shifting issue; I would personally go the HP Tuners route and see if it improves. Based on that, we can then have another conversation of how to move forward.
