Superman Returns is a 2006 American superhero film directed and co-produced by Bryan Singer and written by Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, from a story by Singer, Dougherty and Harris. Based on the DC Comics character Superman, it is the sixth and final installment in the original Superman film series and serves as a homage sequel to Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980), while not directly referencing the events of Superman III (1983), Supergirl (1984) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987). The film stars Brandon Routh as Clark Kent/Superman, Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane, Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, with James Marsden, Frank Langella, and Parker Posey.

Barely.
I use this movies as en excise to fall asleep.
Well to quote Patrick Stewart from Ted “Jesus Christ. Thanks for getting our hopes up and taking a giant shit on us!” He did say that in ted the movie. He of course was talking about Superman Returns
Actually just watched it (& all the old Superman movies) this weekend & I actually enjoyed it & wasn't bored.
I liked Brandon Routh acting but yes it was a badly written script. I feel it would have been better to have him playing the son of Superman. He would have been perfect since he looks so much Christopher Reeve. Remember in Superman 3 when bad Superman slept with that lady. She could have been his mother. So when Lois son doesn't have his powers is because he third generation Krypton. Than work from there.
Okay the Malcolm joke was hilarious. Thumbs up just for that.
It made me laugh out so loud, my child got scared what’s going on with daddy 😂😂😂
@The Fan Without a Face Oh possibly that too.
I do have a ? Was Malcolm going through an Akuma Super Stan phase?
Just for that!? 😂
I didn't like it at first, but when it went on through the ad it hit. Godam this may be the best ad read on youtube
Say what you want, I'm glad Brandon Routh got to play Superman one more time. He was seriously underated as Superman.
I would just like for him to have another Superman movie, as a side project separate from the main DC continuity, where he actually gets to fight Lex Luthor, instead of just getting his ass kicked by him, and his henchmen.
Agreed
God bless James Marsden. He always gets screwed, at least, in every movie I’ve ever seen him in.
Pretty much. I think 27 Dresses is one of the few films I've seen where Marsden actually gets the girl for a change.
At least he can actually fight back in the Paramount Sonic movies.
Who the hell does he think he is?! He ain't Dean Windchester.
At least he had a happy ending with his family in Sonic 2
@Debra the Muggle he didn't really get screwed in Enchanted I mean sure he didn't end up with Giselle in the end but it seems all angles of the love quadrangle had a happy ending
Maybe he should play Superman
I think the best thing about this movie is the casting; Brandon as superman was perfect, say what you will about Kevin but I think he was a good Lex Luthor, and the rest of the supporting cast.
Fun fact: Henry Cavill was in the running to play superman in this. Glad they waited 6 yrs to give him the part.
Meh. Brandon Routh isn't that good in my opinion
I gotta say Kevin Spacey (despite his monkey business that we’d hear about years later) is/was a good actor. Perhaps he played the most menacing version of Lex Luthor to exist in history of Superman Movies.
Routh looks great in stills and poses, but Critic's description of the acting is sadly justified... he is so cool, distant and unapproachable as if he died and came back to life without a soul.
That was for superman: flyby directed by jj abrams
Kevin Spacey is a great actor and his Luthor *should* have been great, but the version of the character in the movie is TERRIBLE, an angry troll who doesn't really does or says anything smart, wastes advanced alien tech on another harebrained real estate scam, and bonks an old woman to get back into business.
I think it's great that the Rebirth Superman comics actually bothered to explore Superman as a father to his son. They're really heartfelt and surprisingly (and ironically) down to earth
Then Michael Bendis came, didn't want to write a married Superman with a son, so he separated Clark and Lois and aged up Jonathan Kent to young adulthood, made him a MLM person, and thus ended ruining the entire family dynamic.
I think Brandon Routh would’ve been an INCREDIBLE Superman if he had better writing
I know it’s going to be impossible to top Christopher Reeves, but who else could you guys imagine Superman?
Agreed
I think they shouldn't have tried so hard to make him Christopher Reeve. Let him make his own performance
And a much better film overall.
@NaturallyMe2011 I think it was good for what they had to work with. We know Tom wasn’t going to get in the suit and thus not fight. The fact he was willing to come back at all is wonderful and does pay homage to Smallville.
I would rather get something then nothing at all.
That bit with Malcom was easily the creepiest funniest shit I've seen all day
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
WEEEE
Sorry, there was an ad break? I was too mesmerised by Malcolm.
@Arcane Fury 6t TY ygtgzj8×*??
Especially the use of the dialogue of the creepy kid, Danny in The Room. Those wonderful Wiseau lines.
That creepy malcolm joke is probably your most hilarious bit I've seen on your channel in while
NC: “Fuck that noise he’s lifting a rock! Wooo! A rock!”
Killer Croc: “It was a big rock.”
I’ll say this, Kevin Spacey was a better Lex than Jesse Eisenberg.
Let's be honest, though, that's such a low bar that it's in Gene Hackman's version of Luthor's lair.
@AhsokaFanboy1138 absolutely agree with this statement wholeheartedly. 100% accurate.
@NjA I agree that Michael Rosenbaum is awesome. He's honestly my favorite version of Lex. Clancy Brown does a good job as the animated version of Lex but my favorite Lex will always be Michael Rosenbaum.. I also liked the friendship chemistry that he and Tom Welling had. You could really tell that Lex and Clark were friends and you can definitely feel the pain when they end up becoming enemies. They both played off of each other so well.
@Moviebuff Shatto
Exactly!
That's because he's actually evil.
Not going to lie. When I was a kid, I loved this movie. It was the first superhero movie I watched and so it has a special place in my heart.
I'd say that's sad, but the first superhero movie I watched was Batman and Robin, so I really shouldn't talk.
Someone in my movie theater let out a bloodcurdling scream when the bullet hit Superman’s eye 😂
Wow, this person was a tad hypersensitive.
It’s a shot that’s too good for the movie it’s in.
So did the guy playing Superman in Epic Movie.
The Malcolm scary stare during the advert brake was really funny.
I’ve just realized how creepy Malcolm could be I mean this is so weird
O hai Denny
@Infinity Pirates I like watching people in their rooms
I laughed the whole time with the reactions during it
Agreed, my friend.
The drawn out joke really gave me time to appreciate how much Malcom’s hair has grown and styled
Kevin Spacey's line delivery of "Krrryptonite!" is the best part of that movie.
The sad thing is, that Malcom/Room scene is fundamentally better acted than it is in the movie with a $3 million budget.
wasn't the SR budget 204 million?
Or are you tearing me apart?
One of the best casting decisions in this was Brandon Routh as he looks more like his comic book counterpart than what Henry Cavill does. The sad thing is they didn't really give him much dialogue when he was Superman. One of the better things about the 1978 motion picture was the conversations between the man of steel and Lois. Particularly the interview in her apartment. There was nothing like that in Superman Returns.
I turned my phone off and Malcom was STILL staring at me
*update* so many likes! Thanks everyone!
I I think I feel the anxiety
@Ruminating Raptor only in dark corners lmao
@Roman Sanchez
It’s been 6 months since your first comment, are you still seeing him? Is this my future?
I was afraid to blind myself because I might see him... forever
I looked away at the wall and he was there!!!
Ok that Malcom part being creepy and was being in the sponsor the entire time I couldn't stop laughing 😆
He’s still watching 👁
Finally just realized it was a parody of that one scene from the room
I didn't even realize that superman doesn't even throw a punch in this that's insane
Malcom: *stares*
Me: *STARES STRONGER TO ASSERT DOMINANCE*
@DangerOctoYT Medusa: Stares in all of your eyes and you all turn to stone.
Me: stares at both of you so you disintegrate into ash.
*staring intensifys
I always enjoy the mid-sponsor segments in these shows. I love that they are all always so unique, they always make me laugh.
Here's how the movie should've started: Superman is at his peak. He's loved by everyone, Lex is in prison, he's married to Lois and has a son. Whilst he's out flying, then comes the announcement that Krypton survivors may have been spotted. He's filled with emotion and doesn't think what he's hearing through. He instantly leaves. We get a shot of Lex laughing when he finds out Superman left then boom, title card. This creates the idea to the audience that Luthor has been planning this whole thing. When he returns to Earth, he's hated by everyone. Lex is out, has become loved by the city. Where there once was a statue of Superman, there exists now one of Lex. Lex is now trying to manipulate Superman's son to join his side. Make it personal. Put the blame on Superman. Male him feel responsible. Actually kill off Lois to hammer it home. That superman leaving screwed everyone over. Also, you can include that his mother died during those 5 years he was away. Really get to him.
I like everything you said except killing lois
This is a Better script than the Movie💯
That's depressing as fuck, even man if steel wasn't that dark😂😂
I was with you up until the fridging. You can make heroes feel sad without killing off their loved ones.
Sounds very similar to the plot of Hook. I’d be down to watch this!
This was the first movie I ever saw in the movie theater when I was a kid. As a kid, I loved Superman! Watched the old cartoons, had the action figures, read some of the comics, etc. When I was 5 years old, I went to the movie theater for the first time with my dad and we saw Superman Returns on the big screen. I was so blown away by that movie, loved it so much. I re-watched it before I watched this video and I think it’s still pretty good in my opinion all these years later.
Malcolm looking at me for almost 3 minutes is probably the creepiest thing I’ve experienced
Could you imagine how creepy it would've been if, at some point, Malcolm blinked?
Jackson Trowbridge Like this film
@Steven Kim oookaayy.. ;O
@Esa Välilä
Maybe ;) But i still dont think the joke was integrated very well 😂😂 It sort of reminds me of Critic's mental breakdown/rant in the beginning of his review for Scooby Doo back in 2012 *shudder*
Never once did I think I would see a "The Room" joke in a Superman review
@John Salerno when critic and Tamara are trying to get Malcolm to go away, they repeat the lines where Johnny and Lisa are trying to get Denny out of their bedroom
Oh hi mark
Where was that?
“Starting off the dark knight with” *He was dressed like a bat*
Nah, they feel the need to constantly re-murder his parents for us.
Well kids are the target audience and they really would not know (and there is always new audiences anyway, expecially in other countries) so I don’t know why people are suprised this needs to be explained again.
"Superman Returns plays it too safe."
Superman returns: POMERANIAN CANNIBALISM
I literally cried laughing during the entire sponsorship 😂😂😂
I remember watching this movie thinking
“This is more boring then trying to understand math”
Yep. Boring indeed.
I remember just looking for people's cell phones to get an idea for what time range it was in(couldn't tell if it was a fictional future, or past oooorrr.... dunno, didn't see a single phone in the film, actually recall watching twice thinking "surely i missed one at some point?" But nope, none, so it *could* technically be any universe where cell phones don't exist? Idk it sucks and was impossible to follow if you mistook it as a stand alone, which most did)
Edit: And apparently I missed a kid pointing a camera flip phone directly in a scene.
Must have fell asleep everytime I watched it, not only did I sleep, I totally forgot that I missed anything. That's gotta say SOMETHING.
Let's be honest here: the best part of this movie was Kevin Spacey screaming "WRONG!"
Love that scene
But Why Did Critic Skip Talking About This Meme
Immediately thought of itsjustsomerandomguy
That's my favorite part of the movie too
@Jackie Nova Was he a bad actor?
Surely Doug is going to include that classic meme of Luthor in this movie. I'm sure it's coming u-
WROOOONG!!
That Malcolm stare thing was legitimately freaking me out. Top tier ad break.
He does have the same look and "feel" of Christopher Reeve's superman
The biggest tragedy of this is the best possible Superman actor never getting a role again
Yeah. Christopher Reeves' death was a real tragedy.
George Reeves deserves some love.
Christopher Reeve is long dead.
@Sajirou Plays I watch the show and that was so in character. Clark was selfish in that show, he never want to be a savior.
@Ezel Francisco Well more like came back, betrayed e verything about his character by giving up his powers when the world needs him for his own selfishness. Leaving his children defenseless if another super villain shows up and he can't protect them. Hears the multiverse is collapsing and will destroy all sentient life, laughs at it, then goes to see what his rugrats painted on the wall.
Yep, he came back alright. As Selfishman.
Now, get this, heres how it should've went down. Tom Wellings Supes hears about the multiverse collapsing, asks if there's anyone else on it and is told that there's a whole group of people. He tells them that he must protect his own home as there's some disaster going on and he has to stay there to deal with it.
Let's say Darkseid is back and has taken over the world, he can't just leave that because of the multiverse, if he does people will definitely die whereas if he lets the other heroes handle it, they could very well succeed while him staying behind could make sure no one else suffers while he's out saving the rest of them.
He says he cannot help because of this and everyone understands, we can still do the Lex Luthor part but just say maybe he built up a tolerance to Kryptonite after being on earth for so long and being exposed to Kryptonite over and over, Lex has to run back to Charlie and live in his lakehouse afterwards.
THERE, character saved.
But instead we got what we got because Tom Welling was tired of everyone asking him to be Superman again and he just wanted to be done with it. Plus it was a neat little paycheck.
Face it, Tom Welling hated the role, hated us and wanted to be free of it.
You forgot to mention that the "dying old millionaire" is Noel Neill - Lois Lane from the original 1940s serials and the 50s TV show!
Random. They couldn't cast her as Lois's mom?
Mind. Blown.
That’s wrong on so many levels
Wow!
And im sure the "must be tough coming back" barman was also Jimmy Olsen from the original TV series.
I bet Malcolm was actually staring and not freeze framed
I know it’s like a trick to the eye but when you glance away and look back it’s looked like he’s breathing. 😆
Legend has it Kubrick was inspired by the Malcolm Face.
Lol man
oof xd
I’d love to see you tackle Smallville sometimes for its brilliance and cheesy fun. That did a better job of exploring Superman.
I'm willing to bet if they had continued this series that kid would have been the first Brightburn.
I actually enjoyed this movie. No one beats Christopher Reeve, though.
I watched it twice on the big screen. I like it, despite I felt that I was on step ahead of the writers.
No one
As always, thank you for the commercial comedy, Doug, Malcolm and Tamara. You guys are the best. :D
One of my favorite episodes. Malcolm's joke, Tamara smoking, kitty cats. Bravo
Ok
I remember going to see this in theaters, and everyone was more excited at the new Harry Potter trailer than the movie
200th like
As they should.
I was more excited for Pirates Of The Caribbean 2, it came out at the same time.
nola bratteig Overload 25 is probably referring to The Order of the Phoenix teaser. There was never a time Warner Bros. didn’t re-release Goblet of Fire.
No it was goblet of fire if it was in theaters
Keeping that dude in the ad scene was pure art.
Ok
This was actually one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time... I about died, when the Hello Fresh ad started... SantaChrist, that was funny!!!
Then The recent multiverse event happens and Brandon Routh is finally humanized AND gives a huge cheesy late 80's smile at the camera to make up for all of it.
Not many people give these guys credit, this episode was absolutely hilarious!
Malcom, you continue to blow ever performance you do out of the water even when you’re just a still image! Best Hello Fresh commercial EVER!
I wasn’t expecting to see a review of this but I’m glad we’re getting it
I actually had a moment think he did do one. Guess I confused the mentioning of the movie in the Superman IV review
I was supries that he didnt refences crisis on infinte earths
ManDevil yes lol
Are you saying it's the review we deserved, but not the one we needed?
“A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.” -The Senate, 1999
I still like this movie for all its flaws. I wish we could go back in time and make a few key changes because I personally feel Routh was great for the role.
That sponsorship integration was one of the funniest I've seen, if not the funniest! Well done, guys :)
Was hoping for a "crrYPtonite!" & "rrRheumatism!" crossover.
I was hoping he'd show any clip with Rumpelstiltskin from ouat lol
We recently reviewed this and I am not sure that it’s quite right to say the film played it too safe. It certainly retreaded ideas from the Donner films, but it was an unprecedented idea at that time to simply ignore sequels and play as a direct sequel to Superman II.
It also was the first mainstream superhero film to really delve into the psychology of its hero and make that the focus of the story. By no means is this a perfect film, but it is more interesting than often is acknowledged and it does a solid job of presenting the character of Superman that is known from the comics.
Feel free to check out our video on our channel and let us know your thoughts.
I'll be honest, I usually fast-forward through the sponsorships, but including Malcolm in this one, and breakin the fourth wall, made me laugh so hard
I love how Malcolm is interfering with the sponcership.
@Matthew Muir with like the texas chainsaw sound cue
@Matthew Muir that would’ve been hilarious
Something that I think would've made the ad even more terrifying and funny: if, at some point during the sponsorship, Malcolm blinked.
Actually watched the sponsorship because of that.
I read this comment before watching, and I was a bit disappointed that he wasn't in the legit youtube ads also. LOL
This has been the best quarantine commercial yet. I laughed so hard and so much.
I can't close my eyes without seeing Malcolm staring at me. My soul has been scarred for all eternity.
Maybe it's just my dark sense of humor, but that dog eating the other dog made me chuckle.
I could see luthor imagining the models scream at his evil. If they emphasized he was imagining it, it would work better
Actually, there would be a discrepancy if S3&4 was cannon. In S3, Clark's mom, Martha Kent had passed at that point & in SR Mrs. Kent is now alive.
I think we can all agree that Malcolm stole the show. 😆
@Tyrant-Den thats what heroes do :D
I mean, he made us all forget what Tamara was doing when Doug interrupted her.
Those Kevin Spacey jokes were comedy gold
I loved this movie when it came out... I loved this movie every time I rewatch it... and I will always love this movie... flaws and all
My personal opinion, it was the best since Donner's first. I still love watching it.
I've never laughed so hard at an advertisement break before 😂
Same! 😂
Considering what's being done to superhero movies of late, this is now Oscar material.
Yeah give it an Oscar for the most boring superhero movie. Either this or Ang Lee's Hulk
Aaaaaaaand what’s being done? Them being turned into a powerhouse in the entertainment industry? Because that’s exactly what’s happening?
It's better than the DCEU.
Superman Returns is too boring to even compete.
This is one of my go to movies when I’m having trouble sleeping.
It’s kinda crazy how the last CW superhero crossover showed Brandon Routh as a great Superman better than this entire movie did.
@MastarNinja Dudes a great actor, movie was just really bad.
Also crazy that it's the same version. I think it's safe to assume he had "a phase" in this movie.
I asked my dad to get this movie when I was a kid I could never get past the 16 minute mark without being bored to tears. Fast forward now and I try to distance myself from all superhero movies. I dont think im missing out
It's amazing how long you've been doing this and how fresh and funny your content still is
A magical movie. One of Tarantino's faves. We learn that not only does the world need Superman, but that Superman needs the world.
Who knew Malcolm staring at the camera without blinking could be so terrifying?
When I saw this in theaters and realized the opening credits were the journey from Krypton to Earth, I couldn't stop crying. I'm not sure why.
god damn that creepy Malcolm skit was seriously kind of terrifying
I found it hilarious that Malcom was STILL THERE when the sponcer ended and was in the intro cut thing! 😂
Imagine If He Was Still Stuck To The Screen At The End Of The Video...
I like staring at people
I love the room quote when that creepy scene with malcom happens 😂
I think this was the best hello fresh skit. I legit laughed out loud.
Parker Posey being in this film annoys me because she could have been the perfect Lois Lane in this film opposite Brandon Routh’s Clark Kent, she has the looks of Lois and has the perfect personality and she just has a personality in general
heck James Marsden being in this film annoys me as he could have been a great Superman however I am so glad Routh got the role except I’m annoyed he didn’t get to do more as he is perfect casting
Superman’s son in this film should have been a clone made by Lex Luthor after having visited the Fortress of Solitude
I was _soo_ thinking how Marsden should've been Superman. He has the looks, goodness and dedication to saving people.
Not to defend this movie, but Superman also doesn't punch anyone in the original 1978 film. I don't even think that there was an action sequence until the last act other than the helicopter scene.
@Kimi FW NC already pointed out that the 1980 sequel had fight sequences, in which Superman does punch. Again, the OP is not defending the reboot's decision to not do battle scenes, but implying that the original did not need a punch in order to still hold up even though it could have easily included more action (the first two films were shot back-to-back).
@Shiranui Aensland Fine. I'll explain. He mentioned that it's 2006 because the movie studio should have had the technology by then to have Superman punch things while giving the older movies a pass for lacking that.
@Kimi FW He clearly said "Not to defend this movie". Pay attention.
Furious Sherman except for that time where he literally executed 3 prisoners with Kryptonite (which was canon post-crisis for years)
Unlike 1978 film, this movie doesn't have well rounded characters, a good chemistry between leads, colors, emotion. So it desperately needs some punching to distract us from boredom.
Was kind of curious about this movie but you just saved me 2 hours so thank you so much for this.
"You sure we didn't put on Brightburn Returns?"
easily my favorite joke in this review
@JjJ offscreen.
Like how all the action went. x,D
Superman returns? When did he leave?
Nice
I was thinking more "The Boys" myself.
The room refrence was amazing and I love it.
I loved this movie the first time. It was a beautiful love letter
I love how Lex completely ignores the fact that Canada and Mexico would be underwater and just mentions the US.
Ikr?! How DARE they leave out the most significantly important countries that border the greater-than-all US of A! 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
And eventually, if I remember correctly, great part of South America would be under water too.
I love they revisited this universe for Crisis on Infinite Earth. Brilliant way to use both Superman and Atom since they’re the same actor.
Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor was one of the few things I liked about this movie
I didn't fall asleep during the movie.
But more importantly: I can still feel Malcolm's teeth staring into my soul.
Hello Fresh really does have a sense of humor. Props to them
I was completely on board with this movie right up to the part where Superman turns into a stalker. Then I was really creeped out.
Peter J Tomasi did a long run with the concept of Superman as a father and all I can say is Jonathan Kent is a fantastic character.
I know I'm late on this but the part where superman was listening to all the cries should have had the sounds of the cop cars showing up, the bank being assaulted and soon. Even if it's at the same desibells as the rest of them, it would have been not only a cool thing for those who noticed, it adds to the realism.
zhengyingli yes they did. But that bit was made by a director who knew how to add drama and suspense without showing it. This director only showed the characters intent.
I think Batman v Superman took that into account. It took quite a while for Superman to reach Lois after Jimmy got shot.
This was my first superman movie. I just watched it. I didnt find it boring at all.
“Hey remember that reboot where they killed Superman’s kid and Lois” oh man I love injustice.
Injustice Superman is soo terrifying.
@VISHALL at least then he had a valid reason for leaving but he didnt leave earth.
I hate Injustice. If you are making Superman evil why make him so irredeemable?
When i was playing Injustice i was still seeing his point of view even if i didn't agree. But i guess you don't want any complexity. Make him a full on villain by killing Shazam. That is obviously more interesting.
Superman turns bad. But does bad things because he thinks that's right. Nope. That's uninteresting. The comics probably did a better job, but i was bored pretty soon to care.
"Oh man, I love injustice."
To quote Archer: "Uh, phrasing?"
Ohhh I thought you meant Crisis on infinite Earths
Props for that whole bit with Malcom being a water mark for like 5 minutes. There is no reason for this gag to be in the video for so long, but I don't care because it's freakin' hilarious.
I was 11 years old and watching this with my cousins in the theater. We all had to pee really badly but chose to old it in until the movie finished. That was prolly the most exciting thing about the movie. And when it finished we all ran across the theater to the bathroom on the other side to piss lol
I couldn’t stop laughing at Malcolm’s cutout
I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I really liked this movie. The flying seen with Superman and Lois Lane was a nice homage to the original but bittersweet at the same time.
I always felt Routh was a great choice to play Clark Kent/Superman. I think that given a better script he could have been excellent.
I love him as Ray Palmer/The Atom in the Arrowverse, but for me his best performance is definitely Daniel Shaw in Chuck. He killed that.
The outtake at the end with your cat interrupting was so cute.
I HALP! I HALP!!
I know
That Malcolm freeze was not only funny but haunting
That feeling when a movie you watched in theaters has become old enough to be featured on Nostalgia Critic.
Even when the movie was new, it was only okay.
BTW, couldn't stop laughing during the Hello Fresh commercial. Took away the creep factor, and I'm glad for it. =P
