How did we get here?
After a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid home that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We've spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we'll need in the future. That led us to needing a place to live while we realized our dream of building a shipping container home. After lots of searching we finally discovered Geodesic Dome's and it was the perfect fit for us while we took our time with the container home.

An incredible amount of work but dreaming about how tasty all the apple pies, crisps, and cherry tarts are going to be was enough to keep us going...it's been a really enjoyable few weeks focusing on the projects that we're really wanting to work on. Todd has been talking about doing this for YEARS and I can't believe we finally have our very own orchard!!! P.S. Next week we're taking a little trip to meet up with a few special guests...any guesses 👀
Hi T.T.C.E.L 💙
Van wife's?
Emaon and Bec or the van wives are my guesses. Ohh I also want to point out how much I love your playlists in the background and that you put them up on your website. When I first started watching you guys a little over three years ago you had a song on your playlist I absolutely adored. Brand New Day by Asher the only reason I was able to find it was from the list you create on your website. Thank you so much I play it just about every morning before I go to work it really gets my day going.
Who sells vegan dumplings? 🎉
Now it time to get a scare crow so the birds will stay away from your fruit....
I have 2 apple trees in my garden and not many apples because the birds keep eating them when they are small
The "I feel cheap" in the Rubbermaid bathtub really never gets old. 🤣🤣🤣
So excited for you guys! Some orchard tips -- (I'm sure you guys probably already did a mountain of research but just in case!): Make sure to prune your fruit trees in late February or March every year! It's important to get fruit trees branching the right way while they're still young, and once they are older, the pruning will help increase fruit size. The best tree form for fruit trees is short, wide, open topped trees. It's important for maximizing light penetration into the tree canopy, and thus, your fruit harvest as well. At the same time, keeping those trees low will also make it much easier to pick all your fruit during harvest! Picking all the fruit as soon as possible will also boost your harvest for the following season (strange I know. It has to do with the hormones released back into the tree buds by developed fruit seeds which signal to the tree that it successfully reproduced and won't need to reproduce, aka create fruit, as much next year). Anyways, hope this helps :)
That is such good advice - nobody wants to haul out a ladder to harvest apples 🍏!
You should get a beehive next spring. Great for pollination, honey to make meade, and they are so interesting to learn about!
One of them are allergic to bee so it is not possible.
Having planted over 30 trees these past few years, I've learned one thing: you have to water new transplants in. The first couple of weeks, it's watering every day. Because you're doing a fall planting, you might seek some advice for frequency and amount of water. I've had great success with fall plantings (cedar and spruce trees), and consistent watering those first two weeks was key to my success. Best wishes to you both as you anticipate fruit gathering in your future.
So, we planted a 6 gallon cherry blossom last season, did all that watering daily, and it lost one branch this season but seems rather unhappy. No blossoms but we kept the leaves alive. Any suggestion? I swear, upstate NY, near the finger lakes too, has the worst soil. At least our home's acreage. Every hydrangea we tried died. We do, however, have some nice volunteer white birch doing nicely.
Wow!! Looks Great 👏👏 will be gorgeous when the mature.. GOOD JOB EVERYONE 💜💜💜
Long, slow waterings versus lots of short frequent waterings will promote strong, healthy root development.
I like planting in the fall, less time to water and less stress on new plantings during the heat of summer.
Guys! You are just a step away from evolving this awesome orchard start into an actual #FoodForest. So exciting! I know you enjoy your research as much as the physical projects, so I'd suggest some winter-reading to feed your knowledge base and inspire more. Here are a few books to add to your library:
"Farming the Woods : An Integrated Permaculture Approach to Growing Food and Medicinals in Temperate Forests"
Ken Mudge; Steve Gabriel; John Munsell
"Edible Forest Gardens" (Vols 1 and 2)
by Dave Jacke and Eric Toensmeier
"Planting a tree is planning for the future" as my grandmother used to say. Every time one of us grandchildren bought a house with a yard, she brought a tree to plant for the housewarming gift. You've planted the future you a nice gift. 💝
The orchard is beautiful! You gotta love Mel for always jumping in to help. He seems like a great guy! You guys are two of the hardest working people out there and all that hard work is going to pay off in a few years! Charlie and Eddie are precious! Every time I see them in your videos, I just want to give them big hugs and kisses!🥰. Take care guys! Hugs!
Whenever I feel that life is hard and I can’t get through, I think about you two and everything you have done to achieve your dream and that gets me through.
You are stronger than you know!
Hugs to you 🤗🤗🤗
If there isn't a huge banquet in Mel's honor when this is all over, we're road tripping up to Canada and making it happen! Mel deserves the gold medal in the men's all-around! Also, we're dying for some fall recipes from you guys! Love from us to you! Eduardo and Chris
Right after my parents moved into our house they planted a pear tree, an apple tree, a cherry tree, a damson plum tree and 2 peach trees. Also a huge strawberry patch, 2 kinds of grapes, a dewberry bush,a red raspberry bush, and black raspberry bush.
I have loved you two for a long, long time but I have to admit that Mel is winning me over! 👍🏼♥️🇨🇦
Gorgeous transformation! I think your homestead is so beautiful because it reflects your souls, truly. Beauty begets beauty.
❤❤❤ Thank you guys!
If you have deer, I would recommend a protective fence around each of your young trees. It's not permanent, just a year or two. 6' field fencing (2x4 rectangles) with 1 T-post to anchor it to, 3'-4' diameter circle of fencing is small enough they can't jump in!
I've done this with my orchards & not lost a tree yet.
Once the trees are larger, some predation of lower branches wont be too harmful to them, and the protective fencing won't be necessary.
As always wishing you lads success.
I was telling a friend about you, and the way I talked about you, my friend thought you both and I were best friends! 🤣 I laughed and said, “Oh, no… they have no idea I exist!” I sure do enjoy your stories though! (And, The Morning Show is SO GOOD!)
LOL that's cute...we know you exist, if that means anything ❤
Important abt Woodchips! Do not put the chips right against the bark of trees, rake away from the tree at least a foot away around, otherwise the chips will rot the new bark at the bottom of the tree and create "girdeling affect" and then the tree will die, because it won't be able to send water and nutrients up to the tree because the tree bark will be broken.❤❤❤ I can't wait to see all the deer on your property!!! May want to do a nice fence around❤
^^ THIS
Cafeteria for deer! Absolutely.
Adding an orchard is awesome! You guys really have created an epic paradise! And hats off to Mel and Charlie the tree guy! 💙🍎🍒🍏💙
Seriously! I was just thinking that we haven’t seen Mel in ever so long. And I miss him. I am thrilled that he is in this episode. He is the best. Helping you with so many heavy equipment projects. Good job Mel and welcome back. These guys could never had made it this far with your expertise.
That was so magical watch come together. Its going to be so beautiful. And think how much more diverse your ecosystem just became. The orchard will invite a huge host of life to thrive and btw we love mel so much ❤
“Plant a tree low, it won’t grow….plant it high so it won’t die!” Aaron’s tree wisdom from Garden Answer!
I live in fruit orchard country (rural Washington state) and have never seen wood chips, only grass or dirt. But our orchards are thousands of acres, so maybe that's why. Your orchard will be beautiful, especially when the trees have their first bloom. Also--be careful when you light that huge pile of brush. You could scorch your tender new trees.
The wood chips was an excellent suggestion for so many reasons. You can also add fresh chips year after year or every 2-3 years. Builds nutrition into the soil, looks attractive and walking on it is nice and cushioneeee. lol You guys are fun to watch and building such a nice place for yourselves.
Keeping a garden journal is great and you can add a drawing of hte trees with their names as things happen to markers but your garden journal is a living journal of your planting life and cycles etc that work in your environment.
Love it! I remember back in the day having a garden plaque that read, "To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow." You now have all the kinds, veggies & fruits! Great vision completed.
What a beautiful and positive message!
Oh my goodness! It's beautiful! You are going to be sooo happy you did this ten years down the road . You kids never cease to amaze me. The ideas you come up with and follow through with. You have a wonderful homestead. What a joy it must be to wake up each morning and see what you have accomplished .Til next week or next video take care Love you kids.
It's so incredible...the pond is now a memory and has given way to an orchard that when it is lush and surrounded by the beautiful maple and pine trees will make the space around the house glow with color. I'm so happy that you finally got your wish. I saw Todd so excited and Tyler you were so handsome on the hammock! 💓 I'm literally in love with the landscapes and sunsets of Canada. Until the next adventure to travel with you. Send you kisses and hugs treasures ❤️
You two really outdid yourselves! Very impressive! Be so proud of yourselves! Much love from my heart to yours❤
You know it's Sunday, when Tyler and Todd are on our screens. Having my snacks and going to watch the vlog. Love you guys. 🤗❤️🇨🇦👍
I’m looking forward to seeing your orchard! I wish I had a bigger yard to do that I only have blueberry trees and love them to make blueberry pies and jam! Good luck with your orchard!! Love you guys ❤❤😊
“I don’t know who we’ve become. We are Impressed with a strangers dump truck skills!” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 y’all are definitely woodsman now. Thanks for another entertaining video. Love you guys
Every time you embark on a new project, the result is always outstanding. You put so much work, dedication, and willpower in all that the end product is always a wonderful sight for us to see.
And money! not a cheap exercise.
Not all fruit trees need a different pollinator. Some trees, like cherries are self pollinating. You should strip most of the fruit on their first year as it stresses the tree if they have too much fruit and the weight of the fruit can break the branches as they are still slim and need to get stronger. Small fruit like cherries are ok though.
Or you can thin the fruit and leave a few……..from California central valley , land of fruit and nut trees for most of the nation. Living here 66 years you learn things. Lol. Love you allways , Hygirl
@Denise Helton they could learn grafting too! Imagine what they could put together in one tree!!
Not sure if it's possible, but could you get a wood chipper and turn a lot of the wood debris into mulch for the trees and garden to replenish what you had delivered??😊
Lol, just finished the video. I get why you don't use your own wood chips. Looks fabulous!❤
I was going to say this too, That pile would make great wood chips for everywhere on their land - paths, new gardens, etc. Chipping that pile would be a much better (and safer?) use of found material. Why waste is with a risky bigger burn?
Guys, don't forget to water these new trees regularly. Without sufficient water they will take ages to establish. Best of luck xx
You guys really step things up a notch when you do a project! Once the trees get established, it will be a wonderful orchard! The wood chips most definitely the best choice. Grass would be pretty, but very labor intensive trying to keep it looking that way.
I’m recently finding that doing certain projects around my place has become more enjoyable due to how you guys approach your projects. Can’t wait to see what’s next! ❤❤
I just want to make sure you’re being safe. I used to work in a lot of restaurants please don’t shovel ice cubes with a glass because if a piece of your class breaks off you’ll never find the chip glass in the ice so if you could please purchase metal or heavy plastic ice shovel Love your videos.✨
or they could just keep a plastic cup in the ice drawer for that same purpose
Every time I see the clip of Todd taking a bath in the storage container I laugh out loud. Love you guys!
My favorite!!
"I feel cheap!!!"
So happy you have a knowledgeable Charlie the Tree Guy to offer advice & guide you two.
Just a tip to pass along. Make sure you have fine mesh guards (such as hardware cloth) around the bottom portions of the trees. This winter, when you have lots of snow, mice will be tunneling through that snow but will not be able to get to your tree trucks. Because that bark is very tender right now and very tasty to them. Also have it extend a few inches above the snow line, so that rabbits also don’t nibble on your trees. Your Orchard is looking absolutely lovely with those hemlock chips!
When I lived in Vermont, I ran into the same issues: mice and voles tunneling under the snow and in Spring so many trees were ringed they never grew back.
My solution was cheaper and lazier than the wire mesh guards: Bag Balm, the ubiquitous fix-all every country dweller keeps on hand (along with Duct Tape). Bag Balm is smelly, natural, water proof, and at least in New England, easily found.
In the autumn, I smeared the tree trunks with Bag Balm extending from soil line upwards about 18". Any left on my hands worked in well as a hand cream. Seriously, best applicator is an un-gloved hand.
No damage after that. I mean, what rodent would want a mouthful of that?
You two are so loved. So much work but we all love you for allowing us to join you on the journey. Take such care of our boys and your boys.
You guys be careful if you burn off that mountain. The heat could damage your newly planted trees if it gets to hot. You two work so hard. Great job on your fruit orchard. Love those tags

How did I miss this weeks video😢... oh yes I was working .... my Client wasn't well ... happy to say she is much better. Caring for others is the pinnacle, eh Tyler and Todd !
Take care of each other whilst doing all this hard work !
A special hello to your wonderful friend Mel 😊 !
Amazing! It was nice seeing you with Max of Max and Occy 🎉❤
I really look forward to watching what you two have been up to each week! And I am always so proud of everything you’ve done every time I see you. But I have to admit, I have one complaint, your videos are just not long enough! LOL! Each week I feel as though I’m catching up on my boys and everything they have accomplished and I just want to see more! Love you two and all that you do and have done along the way! You have the best relationship ever and are the best people and friends and it shows with everything you do! The work that you’ve done on your land is so well thought out and works out fantastically! I appreciate you sharing the behind the scenes details you put in that makes your home the best it can be! You guys are amazing! Have a wonderful week and I’m looking forward to next Sunday!
Good to see you with Max and Van Wives! Love the orchard.
Always amazed watching what Todd and Tyler are doing on their property! Thanks for sharing it all with us! ❤
My husband and I planted a mini orchard when we moved into our house. We’ve been here almost 5 years and we finally got fruit this year! we have plums, apples, and pears. The plums we get are so sweet they are like candy!
Quite frankly, you '5' inspire kindness, love and dreams. Thank you for sharing with all of us. Love you all!❤❤❤
Oh my gosh, you guys! The orchard turned out amazing, and the wood chips make that area POP! It will be so exciting to see those trees start producing fruit, and I betcha Mel will be keeping an eye on them (for his pies of course) 🤣🤣 🍎🍏🍒🫐🥧
When I'm in my garden, I'm reminded that, "We learn from our gardens to deal with the most urgent question of the time, How much is enough?”
Fruits by Fruits, Juice by Choice 😊 .. incredible once again .. nothing wrong with fresh fruit from youre own back yard . Great job Mel , awesome job Tyler and Todd x Aunty Australia 🇦🇺
Refreshing to see a new project. You guys just never stop!
My Sunday is not over without watching you guys. Love it.

Your HARD WORK, communication , creativity & positivity is so inspirational. I LOVE L LOVE LOVE you both & your beautiful dogs and your cat SQUIRREL.❤. Your channel is at the top of my list of weekly must watch.
Happy Sunday Tyler and Todd!🤗🌻
“The biggest mistake people make planting fruit trees is to plant them too deep. Make sure you plant them on top of a mound”. The guys proceed to plant them in nice deep troughs. I hope they’re okay, or that it was just a bad shot.
Every time I think you two have outdone yourselves, you go that one step further to make your place that much better! It's beautiful and it's going to remain beautiful. You two have so much to be proud of with your ingenuity and all the work you've put into your place. You never fail to impress! ❤
I always smile when Mel gets involved. You are truly lucky to have such a skilled and cool guy to call upon!
I am happy, my guys are back. Love you
It’s wonderful to not only see you guys back but also you have had such a fantastic ‘WIN’ in 48hrs - you have been working on such huge projects with roller coaster results - my heart is so happy for you two this week 🥰🥰🥰
You both have done a lot of hard work but it has paid off and it’s looking amazing
AMAZING PROJECT!!! More self-sufficiency!!! Congratulations on your beautiful and practical orchard!!! 🥰🙏❤️🎶🎶🎶🐶🐶
All I want to know, every week, is why Todd is not in the movies 🤗 and Tyler's reactions are everything ❤️ the land is so beautiful!
The orchard looks incredible! And I'm once again blown away by the work you accomplish every video! Great job as always! Enjoy the fruits of your labor soon! 😂❤️
Yay . Monday morning breakfast with my favourite guys. The best way to start the week.
So wonderful! Beautiful spot for your trees, just imagine all the fresh fruits that you're going to have. Mel is worth his weight in gold such a good friend to be able to help yall. Dad always put the fireplace ashs in the mulch piles. So glad to have this time with you guys. Stay safe and enjoy your time together.
Good evening Guys, A pair of busy bees this weekend , your little Orchard looks amazing with the woodchips, Hopefully next year you'll reap the rewards with loads of fruit, Mel, the saviour , you have a really good friend there, Until next weekend stay safe 🐕🐕💖💖🐈
Once more your joy of living and the adventures you are sharing are the absolute best! What a fantastic addition to your place. Thanks for continuing to share your love of living!
Bravo you guys!! Your orchard looks terrific. Am going to enjoy seeing it mature. 😊
"We're crushin' it!" Tyler and Todd's motto. Well-deserved.
You two are my happy place on Sundays. Cortland is my favorite pie apple! Delicious!!
What a magical orchard you have created. And Mel.. hands down a wonderful friend!
My sweet neighbor has a lovely garden with both fig trees and cherry trees. She shares the fruit with us and I bring her homemade baked goods. We think it’s a good trade off! Love your orchard! ❤
Love watching you all the way from Turkiye.
I'm so excited for the orchard! With your green thumbs, I know they will thrive and be beautiful!!! I love the placement so much too! I agree that the hammock belongs right there!❤️🐾🐱🐾❤️
Fantastic orchard guys...what a great neighbour Mel is in always helping you both.
You boys really are the most hard working and dedicated couple. I love watching your progress each week. The orchard is gorgeous. Well done. ❤❤
What a delightful way to wind down my evening. You two bring so much joy to the world. Love the orchard! It looks amazing.
WOW! Absolutely gorgeous orchard. I was hoping you would plant a Honey Crisp apple, my favorite. What a find with Mel, so lucky to have such great “helper”. Thank you so for such a fun entertaining Sunday. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is great. My mouth is watering thinking of all the fruit you will have from those trees. BTW, I once put down wood chips in my yard. It didn’t last because the cats in the area (I live in the city) used it in place of their kitty litter! You only have one cat, and you have plenty of soil she can dig in, so you probably won’t have the same problem. Something to think about, though.
You two are amazing! Such hard work- the orchard looks beautiful and May I add, as a librarian, I love that you labeled all the trees so you will know the variety in the future! 💕🐾🍁
The land is becoming an oasis for the soul and the body!! Great job, you two are the most hardworking people and I love to watch you both each week!!! Thank you
Orchard looks great…😊❤
You guys have done so much in the last couple years its looking amazing. Ive been following for just over 2 years I think maybe longer. I love it all.
Thanks for giving me something to look forward to every week.
Oh that defined area really adds to the look of your "compound". It looks so neat and clean, and just think in a few years when you have mature, producing trees in there. Great job!
The hard work you guys do is amazing. I could be a supervisor. I'm really good at standing and staring. Maybe even pointing. Thanks for sharing your journey!💗💗
Don't forget to water for a long time for the first while. You usually have to water immediately after planting---roses, fruit trees, vegetables...they all need watering right after planting. It's gonna be beautiful to see them in flower!
T&T, I've told you both that every episode I watch, I have a smile on my face throughout. That is a magical thing that you both do. The orchard transformation is absolutely beautiful! By the way, Todd has a new nickname now "Wild Fern". Love you both and your trio too! 😁❤
I absolutely am in Love with the land and all that y'all have done!
Thanks so much - us too!!
WOW so amazing guys,, just think of all the fruits you will have, and cooking pies . every Sunday evening with you both feels great, have a great week guys, and thanks for sharing your dreams and hard with us all.
Great looking orchard love the signature that you created for each tree. The only thing l would advise is to protect the bark on the young trees from deer eating the bark is tree tape to protect them until they mature. As long as your in the pie making business now I’ll take a cherry one in a few years.
Don't mulch to the base of the trees! This is a common mistake. Leave several inches of bare soil so the trunk is dry. Mulching right against the tree encourages rot, fungus, insects, and weakens the bark.
it will look so cool when all that fruit starts blooming. well done guys xoxo
You guys are stunning, the dedication you show to eachother, and the land, humbles me, please continue.❤
Your energy and happiness is so contagious ❤ It looks amazing 😊
Looking forward to seeing your orchard grow. You guys worked real hard to get this done.
You are absolutely creating your own private garden of eden! It’s so beautiful. ❤❤❤
"Fruits by Fruits" made me laugh out loud! Too funny!
Love that you are back this kind of content. A lot work but the progress gives a since of completion and with everything going on the house build, you all need this!!❤
Wow! you guys are so beautiful ! Amazing how you are building your piece of paradise in the woods. With love , compassion and empathy. it is a tonic for this guy to watch you do your projects. Really really inspiring. I love projects as well.
Your orchard is better. Imagine the fruit you should get. That mulch looks beautiful, too. Enjoy.❤
