This is the entire history of the Destiny franchise. This is the story of Guardians everywhere. This is our story.
Destiny has changed a LOT since 2008, so today we're going on a nostalgic journey through the ages to relive the Destiny experience over the years. If you're a veteran player, this will be a fascinating and nostalgic experience. If you're a newer player (or a player who took a break), this video will fill you in on what you missed. Since most of this content is no longer playable in the game, it's important to recognize it and reflect on how we got to where we are today. I hope you enjoy this video, and thank you so much for watching. Seriously. It means the world.
Thanks to Bungie for creating such an awesome game. Much of the footage, trailers, and videos are from their social channels, which you can find here:

I spent hundreds of hours on this video, I hope you all liked it!
Thanks for the vid, mate. Brings me back. Edit: and the music still gives me chills
Thank you for the amazing vid, you must have done a lot of researching and/or scripting!
@Me and E Gaming yes indeed haha! thanks for watching :)
@Shadow Destiny what is the music that starts at 1:27:52?
*a cancer cell reaches maturity*
10M views here we come. This is gonna be a historic video in the Destiny community
W
I was literally just thinking I need to watch a video on everything that’s happened in Destiny. The algorithm knooooowssss
Literally
So true, the destiny fan base are all lore masters
Bit of a stretch lmaoooo
Absolutely surreal. I remember getting Destiny for Christmas back in 2014, to think its been almost 10 years. Been on and off with this game for a long time, but I still love it.
I was also gifted this game. Crazy to think about.
@Shadow Destiny Same, Chrismas morning I remember loading destiny up for the first time
I was only 10 years old when I first got this game that Christmas. Will probably be one of my favorite games of all time
Crazy how we were all "Christmas Noobs" back then. Miss it.
the fact that i started this game patroling the cosmodrome inn vanilla destiny just makes so many memories of this game pop in my head. this game is truly a masterpiece in my opinion.
Destiny 1 was such a magical experience. I still play and love current expansions, but the feeling back in 2014 was just so beautiful. I would do anything to go back
F
This so much
The power of nostalgia
I hate to say it, but I hope that instead of trying to squeeze another decade or whatever out of Destiny they make a new game that recaptures the magic of D1Y1. No matter what that feeling's not coming back with this series sheerly because we know everything about it now, for all its faults I miss when it was the wild west and nobody knew what they were doing. I'm hoping Matter will be good.
Me too!!!
Man, I miss DeeJ. He was such a good community manager and the old streams revealing house of wolves, taken king, rise of iron are such fond memories. Being a gamer since a little kid I love that Destiny has kept me in it since the D1 Beta. No matter how old I get Destiny will always mean a lot to me between meeting new people, iconic moments in gaming, etc
Crazy to think that, when Taken King launched, I was 15 and in my final year of middle school. It's the first time Destiny caught my attention since the live action trailer looked badass to me. I'm 23 now and looking forward to Lightfall, it's insane how fast time has gone by-
15?????!!?? In your final year of middle school? Homeboy what?
We’re in the same boat lol
15 in middle school? did you get held back?
Not everyone is from the UK or the US
Same bro I played the Alpha for destiny 1 and ran Titan all through everything. I played it with my cousins every night and I’d be staying up til 5 am on school days trying to beat Aetheon since we always wipe lmaooo. Then I met my second raid group randomly and I ran with them almost as much as my cousins, I miss them man they were hella cool and every night with them would always be hella funny. I was 14 when I started, freshman in highschool. Now I’m 23 and I’ve been out of highschool for about 6 years now it’s crazy. Btw Destiny 2 will never compare to Destiny 1 idk what it is but I feel like the adventure in D1 was a lot more magical compared to D2 where imo is kind of dry.
I don’t think I could play original Destiny today and not shed a tear. The music, the friends, the loot, too many amazing memories
Edit: Thank you all for the love (more likes than my whole channel lol) and I enjoy reading everyone's feedback, much love
Felt this
I agree Destiny got me through a lot of tough times with the awesome player base before it went haywire into what we have in destiny 2. Met a lot of close friends who play other games with me to this day. Destiny wasn’t just a game it was a experience!
Variks rewards you...
Just rebought it and downloaded it on the ps5. People still running around in the tower, just not so many! Had to go to Venus again, so many fond memories of just killing fallen or vex all day there. Cheers!
Facts
Honestly, I realize how much fun I've had playing this franchise since it came out, and I have to consider it one of my most treasured game universes of all time. I'm still playing today, and have been pretty much continuously since the First Look Alpha, and that has to stand for something!
even not being a D1 veteran and just a fairly new D2 player, seeing the footage and hearing about D1 feels nostalgic.
This video was honestly so meaningful to me. Thank you for all your hard work. There was a fair bit I forgot about over the past 6-7 years and a fair bit I loved revisiting in this video. The memories and nostalgia mean a lot to me.
This comment means a lot, thank you
I haven't played it for quite some time now. But seeing the original startup-screen and hearing that horn section play still gives me the goosebumps. What a great game this was/is. Thanks for your hard work of putting this thing together. Two hours packed with nostalgia. Loved it! Keep it up ❤️
Watching this brought back the nostalgia. This was so new and fun, and everything was exciting
So what was the point of Destiny 2 again?
I think bungie could learn a lot by watching this. Really highlights what we’ve loved and hated throughout and what really makes the game, the game
The game's great now. Has been for a long while since beyond light
@Reggielacey 223 Don't speak such words, this community only knows "D2 bad"
Seasonal content gets pretty stale after a while but it’s still nowhere near as bad as the months of d1 where there was literally nothing to do
@Reggielacey 223 Game is not grest at PvP was destroyed and is still neglected to this day and its hemorrhaging players.
@Nicholas Grogan it's a pve story driven game. PvP is secondary
Dude! That was insane! From a D1 player, I've taken breaks from both games and am pretty happy with the direction D2 is taking. Thank you for the hours it took to put this together as it filled some holes in the story I had, even though it was merely an overview! Awesome content! Subbed!
Glad to hear it!
This is one of the best videos I've ever seen, such a great recap that brought back so many memories. I really appreciate you for bringing us back through the entire journey, I feel like I forgot so much. Thank you, Shadow!
The amount of nostalgia I experienced throughout this video was insane. Very well made
This game has it's ups and downs but watching the entire history unfold puts into perspective that this game only gets better and better with time. The community likes to complain, but from vanilla D1 to Lightfall it's really grown into it's own. Excited to see what comes next!
Truly amazing video. It felt nice to rewatch this destiny journey and think back on how crazy and fun the journey really was. Props to you👏🏽
All new light players need to watch this, even veterans. Is very nostalgic for me, looking back from the beginning.
It's not that important tbh
@Reggielacey 223 Nah, but if you want the history of the game's evolution to see how far it's come, it's very entertaining. This video is about as important for chronicling the evolution of Destiny as Byf's videos are for chronicling the lore.
@Reggielacey 223 it really is tho it’s like seeing your past in real life
4:46-5:05 I literally felt like I was sitting in my parent’s house, waiting to see what this game would offer. I’ve got to say I never knew how much this game meant to me until I heard that. My little brother got me back into it recently and I am wondering why I didn’t play the current one on launch. Such an amazing company to have created this journey for us all
I started playing during the Taken King and have so much nostalgia from this. I hope there can be another game generating as much global hype as destiny 1 did soon, was an amazing experience
The original destiny main menu almost brought tears to my eyes. The close friends I’ve made and the escape I had when things got tough in the real world when I was younger. Destiny got me through a lot of tough times to get my mind off things and it will remain the game I will hold dearest to my heart. I love destiny 2 but nothing compares to how destiny 1 was.
Been playing since destiny 1 beta. Love this video and seeing how much the game has changed
Thank you for letting me relive my favorite parts and the parts I missed out on in D1 and D2
As a Beta player for both D1 and D2 this made me tear up a little bit. The nostalgia is unreal
same, I still sometimes see the "first look alpha" in my list of owned titles on my ps4 and start getting nostalgic.
fr bro it feels wild
I totally forgot I played the alpha
I still wish they brought back “The Old Guard” shader, but I still love the old beta calling card.
@RandomThingamajig The first look alpha is still mind blowing. The graphics have evolved so much it is mind blowing! Alpha graphics remind me of halo CE
holy hell was this a trip down memory lane. as a beta vet, i can't express the rise and fall of emotions this game put me through and the fact D1 was only a three-year roller coaster is shocking. so many insane experiences, the collective hype felt round the world at launch and again at Taken King, Rise of Iron bringing not only amazing world building but another new raid that somehow topped Taken King AND great story, just to have it all squander at D2 launch. Then we go through a very similar cycle up to Forsaken to now settle on what everyone knows and loves (or hates) upon the release of Shadow Keep. What a whirldwind this game has been and to think next year will be a decade of defending the Last City
Dude you earned a sub I've had this video saved for a while and just didn't have time to sit down and watch it because I knew it was going to be awesome You landed this perfectly! You made me relive moments in D1 that I forgotten about and that's greatly appreciated 👍🏻
Brought back so many memories, such good work. If I could point one thing out, you could’ve also mentioned when primary weapons received infinite ammo. Might be small but I remember it being enough to make the game feel much better, for sure
this is really great. It sheds a lot of light on why the game, post launch, seemed to have these sudden pivots in tone. The original sense of wonder and mystery really drew me in before d1 launched. The music and familiar planets with ruins of our lost civilization... And then came the grind and the goofy dialog.
The lore of destiny is so amazing that I can't wait to see a TV series and movies
This deserves so so much more attention. I don't know you personally but I'm proud of you for making this
that means a lot, thank you
Straight up you a real one
Brought me back all the way. Thank you.
Man the nostalgia on this video. I remember when my buddies told me this would be the game. I remember all the early music. I played mostly sports games but then this game consumed me for years.
This video makes me so sad. Knowing we’re coming up on the final DLCs for destiny 2, it’s so crazy to look back at everything that’s happened. I remember beta testing destiny 1 with my brothers and completely geeking out. Whatever happens after destiny 2 comes to an end, I just hope that I can find another game to follow along with for years like I could with this one.
Wow, all these unforgettable memories came flooding back. I haven't played destiny since 2020, but I was there day 1 in 2014.
Cheers to the best gaming experiences of my life with the boys in D1, even more than the 2001-2009 OG halo days.
I feel so sad yet happy
Not just because of the destiny memories but all the games I used to play back then
Taken king still gives me goosebumps. I've made so many friends in this expansion and so many great memories, that's why I live destiny franchise so much. The epic moments.
By far and away one of the best compendiums I've seen of this incredible game we all love to hate. I wouldn't trade the journey in for anything. Amazing work, Shadow. Superb.
Watching those clips of frostbolt popping off with ace when it came out in forsaken brings back a lot of good memories. 0-5500 videos were some of the most memorable community content for me personally.
Still get goosebumps watching that live Action Trailer like it was for the first time, so much Nostalgia Destiny has been a Journey💯
This is like a history channel for video games and I love it I can’t wait to see more expansions for destiny 2
As someone who consistently jumps in AND out of Destiny for long periods of time, this was an incredible video. Never forget the title screen and music of Vanilla D1 and how much this game series blows me away for good and worse.
I have unconditional love for Destiny. I don’t play much anymore, but still have my heart .
This video was absolutely beautiful. There have been so many ups and downs with Destiny over the years but I'm glad to be part of this wild ride and like you said, the memories that we have made will last a lifetime.
Thanks so much!
I couldn't have said it better myself!
I've been playing since the launch or the dark below i cant believe how much of an impact this game has had on my life over the last 10 years
The nostalgia, the memories, the anger from my teammates knowing I had just gotten another "useless" 4th Gjallarhorn drop when they were 6 months in and still not getting their first. :) Love the recap of all D1 (and pre-release even) through to D2. Thanks for making this definitely happily subscribed to see future stuff!
I'll never forget the original Destiny; I spent lots of hours in that game with my brother, friends, and random people across the globe. The PVPs, strikes, custom games, collecting materials for exotic weapons, and, of course, the raids. I miss those days and all the free time I had. I really enjoyed my late-night gaming session. I even had to cover the gap in my door so the light wouldn't go through, LMAO.
I truly miss the 2014 to 2017 Destiny
It was awsome, what happened to this masterpiece :(
You video brings back so much memories... The first Vault of Glass during something like 5 hours, the first Crota...
The musics, the friends i made...
If i had a time machine, i'd probably go back to 2014 to discover the game again.
I know Destiny 1 will forever be in my heart ♥️
I keep coming back to this whenever I need a bedtime story. Well-researched, thorough explanation for those who weren’t there and those who want to remember the days gone by.
The grind you speak of in Destiny 1 Year 1 was one of the greatest and worst feelings ever. Getting an exotic in early D1 was the some of the most dopamine that I have ever had released in my life. The amount of time I spent at the loot cave w my friends is unreal. Loot Cave brothers where you at ?!?!?!
Also shout out to my forever 29 brothers. The OGs will never forget your service.
I miss the loot cave
I remember that first time playing Vault of Glass. Me and my buddies had so much fun, even found glitches and bugs. It was truly awesome. I even remember just numerous amounts of people farming at the Loot Cave
Absolutely amazing video!!! The nostalgia was actually real and I appreciate you for making this video and bringing me back to the good ol days
thanks so much for watching
Even though it was an absolute mess the world of Destiny in 2014 was completely magical. Even now when I hear the classic cosmodrome music my heart feels all warm and fuzzy.
I started all the way back in the Dark Below, little did I know this game would be the one that took up most my childhood. So many memories and friends made because of this game. I don’t think there will be anything like it for me personally. I wish I could go back and play it for the first time all over again.
Love the video, thank you for the much needed nostalgia and where it all started. It is an amazing feeling to watch and know I was there for these amazing moments.
As a D1 veteran it was amazing to catch up watching this video. I sunk around 200 days on D1 and played D2 up until Shadowkeep. I’m really glad to be filled in on the last few years after taking a hiatus and can’t wait to start playing again. Thank you for this video!
Thanks for watching!
cany wait to see you come back guardian
jfc Shadowkeep was released little over 3 years ago? Seems like only a few seasons ago for me, since I did the same as you, taking a break during that time since comp PVP was complete ass to play due to cheaters
@Chris Arroyo I know right? Crazy to think that Forsaken's launch is closer to D1's original launch than to now. 4 years vs almost 4 years 5 months
Man I grew up with this franchise, I still remember downloading the open Beta on my new Xbox One when I was like 12 😭
Im only 10 minutes in but already this video is iconic. Seeing memories and moments i had forgotten about is so surreal. Great video brother🫶🏽
God damn I sure missed a lot, joining the same season the Witch Queen came out. That's a really fantastic summary of everything that's happened so far and I'm so glad to be caught up not just in the lore but also in the history of the development of this game! Thanks!
I was a COD only player when d1 came out. My online buddy suggested the game and I passed on buying when it first released. After a couple months I finally bought d1. Ever since then I've become a destiny diehard fan. This game has pulled me in and I have spent more time playing destiny than any other game. I really do love the game!!! So much nostalgia in this video.
As an Alpha player, this brings back good memories. It's been almost 3 years since I've played Destiny. 👍
What a journey it was and has been, here’s to something that has been a pure definition of change, great video ❤
Love u Evan dude. Keep your grind up. I never miss a vid.... literally
Thanks man! Reflecting on all of these years really puts our current situation into perspective. Crazy how far this game has come
And here comes the end of the FIRST Saga that's crazy
Ayo a famous person
@I am no longer bored so I am no longer dirt Ayo a piece of dirt
What a well made video from start to finish !! I'm proud to be part of Destiny veterans players this game is beautiful it has it flaws yes but still perfect to my eyes. Can't wait to see what surprises Bungie hold for us in the future. Also Beyond Light is my favorite dlc of all time 🔥
As a d1 vet and a d2 beta vet I’m happy to see what destiny has done over the years I think lightfall right now is peak destiny experience, I can’t wait for final shape
Right now as I’m separated from my pc and have been since light fall comes, I’ve watched a lot of your videos and as a super causal player (like I played witch queen for a day casual) watching a lot of the D2 community videos and especially this one has me so hyped to get back to my pc next week and cram hours into this game. This was truly a masterpiece of a video and I can’t even begin to fathom the amount of time that went in to the making of this craft. Thank you for this and your other videos and keep up the great content.
I remember buying Gjallarhorn on that second week, the rest is history. I can say for a fact that having the horn made my experience a helluva time.
I had no idea just how much content Destiny as a whole had and has. I started around near the end of Season of the Risen, and so when I looked at this video, I was baffled at just how much story there is and was. Anyway, lookin forward to LF and hopefully I can experience more of Destiny 2 as much as I can
I think that this is going to forever be a hot take based on everyones reactions, but I always liked it when loot was more rare. I liked how greens and blues would still be something you had to go and decrypt. It added a lot to that special feeling when you finally got some legendary gear
yeah personally I'd agree, nowadays 99% of loot is worthless.
@Shadow Destiny and its all shit legendaries
agreed. exotics are handed out for free now and 99.5% of legendaries are useless
This may truly be one of my favorite videos on here, just going through the ups and downs of this franchise again in detail like this was wonderful. It's crazy, I was around 16-17 when the first game launched, barely a Junior in high school. Now I'm 26 with a daughter, a shitty job, and going to college finally. Oh how things change and evolve over time.
Destiny 1 was definitely one the best all time games to be released, poured hundreds of hours into it, it was very addicting and fun.
1:10:47 that Intro ... gives me Goosebumbs every time , i miss Forsaken
Fantastic video. Super nostalgic seeing the last decade of my life summed up.
Glad you enjoyed it!
As someone who played since the beginning of D1 but has taken several long breaks this was nostalgic and extremely informative fantastic video👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is so well-made, this will definitely reach multiple million views, at least after lightfall’s launch. This is the highest quality Destiny story video, I can’t imagine all the work done here. You even made custom subtitles for a whole 2-hour video. Nice work, love it
When I was a kid looking back at the Hall franchise, I was always bummed that I had missed the time to experience the franchise and watch it evolve with such a great fanbase. Seeing this really stoked my memories and how much I appreciate destiny being the game that I was old enough to play end enjoy all the way since the launch in my freshman year of Highschool all the way up to now and watching it evolve since.
oh the things I would do to go back and play Destiny for the very first time... seeing broman react to getting his frist vault of glass raid cloak for the hunter was just instant relatable in game hype. nothing will beat that. Destiny 1 truly was my favorite game of all time.
Wow man I’ve been playing since alpha I was about 10 at the time im 19 now almost 20 and man this vid was a major nostalgia trip for me. Thank you for making this this made me so happy!
I have too much nostalgic with Destiny. Taken king really hits a special place in my heart.
That was great, much respect for the dedication to organizing and writing such a comprehensive video.
thank you
One of my favorite things was seeing someone level 32 (I joined in Dark Below) and everyone would rush to them to inspect them and look at their gear. No one does that anymore. It was marvelous🔥🙏🏽
As one of people who has played since the D1 Beta, its so nostalgic watching the history i lived. Everything you covered i remember clear as day "Everyone was working through The Taken King's story" and all i can think is YES YES THAT WAS ME, I faked a sickie that day and slammed through it, while everyone else had finished school and would be on there way home, i had beaten Oryx and was already working through quests and getting more exotics. And thats just 1 example. I wish i could relive those days, especially knowing now, those were the good days.
I cried watching this. The music brought me back. Always wanted a son to play games with me. This game has given me that to this day. We did vault of glass together. Still remember it to this day. thank you Bungie.
This video was so nostalgic as a Destiny vet this was such a great video
I’m nearly crying. D2 is my favorite community based game, and seeing the story I missed out on is almost too much
This was such a great video. Thanks for making this. Brought back a lot of memories. I’m so far behind now I can’t start playing again
The nostalgia music intro @ 4:59 will forever be etched in memory as we guardians banded together, and took to the galaxy to be become legends! 🥲🥲🥲 Say what you want about this franchise....through all of its ups and downs, it is truly a masterpiece.
Picked up playing again when beyond light came out, took a break during witch queen, and picked up again last week. The beginning grind is satisfying doing nightfalls and vanguard strikes
Nostalgia hits like a truck...
And to that, we saw the original image of the traveler in the last cutscene of the current season
This was so damned great. I’ve been playing since the Alpha, and this video reminded me of things I had completely forgotten. Thanks for taking me down memory lane 😊
Destiny 2 is what kills the game for me. Taking away paid expansions smh meanwhile Destiny 1 had like what? 5 expansions and they didn’t take away any of it
Been playing Destiny since day one and found this video an absolute treat to watch and reflect on. Great work on the video!
thanks so much Andrew! Glad you enjoyed it :)
I remember the first time I played destiny, at the time I was way too young therefore I was terrified to do the second mission because the thralls looked scary so I just spammed the first mission only. I finally got the courage to do the mission and I ended up enjoying destiny, looking back now makes me nearly cry from the levels of nostalgia coming from the opening music.
9:00 This is why I loved destiny back when it launched. There weren’t any API leaks back then. That sense of discovery was what made exotics so unique. Now, we aren’t as surprised since we know what they are right off the bat (except for the raid exotics), and most of them are given like candy, especially armor.
I was only 10 years old when this game first released in 2014 and fell in love with it. I was first introduced to the game by my brother who was playing Destiny, who has sadly passed away in 2020. I use to tell him how excited I was after every boss kill, XP level up, and core gameplay mechanics. The Destiny franchise is so close to my heart, as it created a bond between my family and friends. #Riseupguardians
This is such a nostalgic trip holy cow, D1 has so many good memories
I was in full purple week 2 with the loot cave, at a time where we all were wearing blues and greens. It felt so good. We had another loot cave in a moon mission shortly after, and I got my first Exotic a month into Destiny 1.
My friends are really into destiny. And I’m trying to play with this more so this is kinda helpful. Thank you!
I remember accidentally going flawless on the first day and the excitement when we saw that there is a new destination on the map. Never had anything like that again in Destiny.
Being a newer player, and reaching the point of teetering between uninstalling and persisting with the grind, I find this video to be extremely important. Sometimes we forget the past, and we grow accustomed and entitled to the present. Watching this has allowed me to gain a greater appreciation of the amazing strides the game has made sense it's initial alpha release.
Just finished the video and.. wow I feel like I just watched a movie very well put together and you know what you’re talking about. The destiny 1 part of it was definitely my favorite! Miss it a lot
❤️❤️❤️
Amazing video! The Taken King expansion will always have special place in my gaming life.
Remembering d1 trials and the raids and the community, it makes me emotional even thinking about I didn’t start very early I started playing d1 around taken king but it was the best😢
Man this video brought me literally like no new information about the game, but the nostalgia kept me watching.
