- Hogwarts Legacy is finally here! Is it the game die-hard Harry Potter fans have been waiting 20 years for?
Thanks to WB, I received an early copy for review and have been playing the game for the past several days. There's still much to be discovered, but this video contains my early impressions for the game and what I think so far.
This video is free of major story and gameplay spoilers.

To be fair a student staring vacantly into the distance is pretty realistic especially if they are not doing well in school
Lol!
Nothing that cant be fixed by staring at a lake
The classic anime trope of looking outside the window in class
Yeah though in fairness if they are going to have them staring totally still like that, they should give the model a book so at least it looks like they are reading
I laughed so hard at that student staring off into space XD poor dude probably just got done with a mountain of homework
😂
Maybe he’s sleeping with his eyes open lol

Thanks so much for making a fairly spoiler free video. Its hard to find content on this game that wont just ruin our first experience of the game. 😊
No problem, Jack. Glad you enjoyed it.
While I hope it's Wizarding world related, this studio has earned my attention for whatever they do next.
Great point! What a passionate team
100% If the early reception to this game is in any indication though…their next project will for sure be wizarding world related.
Warner Brothers seems like they care about their products going to games. All the Batman movies were crazy good.
@RetroRaconteur i need someone who review from pc.. not console.. have u also play on pc?
i mean, there were 2-3 games that ran well on console, but sucks at pc..
Hopefully in the future they create a rendition of Ilvermorny!
Turning the map off is a great option. I got used to not having a map up all the time in Elden Ring and it really added to the focus on the world and added to exploration.
Agreeeed!
True like in gow ragnarok
Glad it's toggleable. Wish Elden Ring would give me a toggleable one. I get lost easily and find myself opening the map in Elden Ring like every 10-15 minutes.
@Josef Rudy how is looking at the map every 10-15 mins a problem though? I think when exploring I open it at least once every 3-5 minutes xD
@Mister K that's why I want a mini map so I can place beacons of interesting places and find them easier
8 Hours in and I can say that this game is even better than we were hoping for! The map is ridiculously huge, even with an upgraded broom it takes forever to traverse and there is stuff to find around every corner. Combat is amazing feeling (The swapping between sets of spells takes a bit to get used to but becomes second nature after a while).
Fighting enemies of way higher level isn't impossible and is incredibly fun but one slip up can hurt badly.
The game runs extremely well on the series X besides a couple tiny spots in Hogsmead and Hogwarts where the frames drop a bit, but I am playing before the day one patch to that's understandable.
Hope everyone has as much fun as I am!
after all these years I still love to fly around the castle on the ps2 games and it's not even a bit boring. Imagine how much fun this beautiful version will be, the first thing I'm gonna do is hop on my broom and just fly
Same here...the flying looks downright amazing.
I think u get your broom a couple of hours in to the game. But I agree, I loved those old game 😍
Omg same, I played on the GameCube and I could just fly around forever
You don’t get a broom till 12 hours in haha
I would turn on POA on my PS2 just to fly around on buckbeak for hours
Game aside, I really have to compliment you on how you put this review together. Totally professional. I feel a lot more confident buying something like this when I get a clear- eyed take on the product. Nice work!
Wow. REALLY appreciate you taking the time to comment this, Dan. It's always a tricky balance with videos like this because I felt like I left so much out, but at the same time, I want people to experience a lot of it for themselves. So instead of going too gameplay heavy, I focused more on the overall fun and how the game made me feel. Happy to hear it resonated with you!
Completely agree.
I'm pretty sure that camera shake is something clipping into the scenery. I'm amazed a dev team that did Cars 3 of all things managed to pull this off. I hope they stand on their success here to reach even higher heights with the sequels.
It really is very impressive.
@RetroRaconteur Not to put too fine a point on it, but it's like a kid who's only ever done color by number drawings suddenly producing a passable copy of a Rembrandt. I say this with the best of intentions, but I genuinely hope this turns out to be the weakest game in a truly beloved series a la Mass Effect. I think... rather, I hope, we stand on the precipice of a glorious new age of HP fandom.
Hey I’m good I have some friends house iiiiiiiiii I’m i
Tbh, I love the story and walking around without having to do endless useless combat. The combat does feel impactful in a way.
I'm absolutely adoring it! It's legit one of the best games I've played in years and years!
I've been having a blast with this game!!! Exceeded my expectations and then some! It's surreal that it's finally here! Also been enjoying the crucio curse maybe a little too much lol (fought a group of poachers and deciimated all but one, i cast crucio on him and slowly walked up to him and just watched him writhe in pain, it wore out and cast it again and then killed him 😅)anyways surely there will be a sequel i mean there has to be... right? 🥺
I like the fact the game is more like a movie with you as the main character
That's called an RPG
@XXXXX I know but this game gives off diffrent kind of vibe if you know the score playing in the bg for a moment you will get it if you have played the game
@XXXXX modern rpgs are almost never like that. especially western ones
@Andrew every Jrpg i have ever played makes you follow their characters story, not your story.
@Pandallamakoala this isnt a jrpg lmao
I've been counting down the days and the time has finally come! I didn't think I could be any more excited but then I watched this video and now I'm even more hyped. I can't wait to explore every inch of this game, savoring it and going slowly to really immerse myself. I can see this being a very replayable experience but you can never recreate the feeling of that very first playthrough so we have to cherish it! Awesome video, you touched on many things without spoiling so thank you for that!
Really good video! I love the genuine style you use in these videos. Not just keeping hype train on track but instead giving little bit critic also. Since I'm guy who mostly enjoy From Software games but have also read Harry Potter books and have been little bit middle ground to buy or not buy this game and giving it a chance your videos have been useful for me.
I’m really happy to hear the game feels like it’s meant to be savoured. Really excited to dive in whenever I get my hands on it!
Thanks for the awesome video Retro! You, James, Ben, and everyone else deserved this early access, you all worked so hard and deserve it! I look forward to all your upcoming content, thanks for being great!
Thank you!!!
I've watched every video this channel has put out, especially on this game. I appreciate all of the work and time you've put into your content. Thank you so much. I've not been this excited for a game to release in a while.
I'm just so ecstatic to see all of you guys play this game, even though I have to wait longer, it's great to see you guys honest review from all perspectives. Thank you for another great video Retro!
You can play mines bae 😌
Happy for all the Potter fans out there. Enjoy your game.
I've been watching you since you only had a handful of Hogwarts Legacy videos on your channel. You've done a phenomenal job making tasteful, interesting, and just fun videos for everyone in this community to consume when we had next to nothing on this game, and still up to now. I'm proud of you man and thank you for what you do.
I look forward to your future content now that we're finally at the finish line!!!!
Thank you for making this video! All seems great so far, and even though the "staring into a black void" NPCS might bother at some point, it's definitely not a deal breaker. I'm very much excited to be playing this game tomorrow!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
I am afraid to watch the whole video because of spoilers but holy heck I can't believe that the developer who did cars and smaller games seems to have actually maybe pulled this off. The game seems to run pretty well and looks pretty good too. I did watch the cutscene after character creation and was really impressed with the cutscenes. Feels like a cute animated movie that's not afraid to get into some heavy themes. Can't wait for midnight.
No story spoilers and just a few minor gameplay ones. Watch when you're read! The video will be here 😊
😍😭❤️ it's here! I can't believe this is happening!
Looks so good! So happy you got to play more than the demo
Great work on this video! I enjoyed every single bit of it! Just an added tip for your Merlin troubles, Accio is my go to for them. It works great. And the reward for doing them is increased inventory space so a great tip if you find your inventory full all the time.
Thx again Liked and subbed
The balanced uncapped is pretty good. Between the 40s and 50s even the uncap on ray tracing goes up to near 40 quite more standard than not. And it’s enough to take off that very hard judder at least for me to enjoy
Hi Retro! Just taking the oportunity to day thank you for your hard work on your videos I have been watching them on my free times and I love them specially from a point of view of someone who grew up with the books and now is a parent, same as me ! . Greetings from Mexico🎉
First game I have pre-ordered in years, it's always a risk but so glad it's paid off and is amazing. Cannot wait to sink into this
Crazy thing, every weird small problem has actually been a plus for me. The npcs standing around statically reminds me of the original Harry Potter 1-3 games and the way the characters interact in the dialogue interface reminds me of Star Wars KOTOR. I feel lucky that the problems with the game will only cause me to feel nostalgia! 😅 Not saying it should be a plus for others, only that I am happy if won't hamper my experience.
Hey, the dialogue animations in this game are legit better then Horizon Zero Dawn was... Sooooooooo....
Also, Dragon Age Origins is one of the best games ever made and it was also so weirdly/poorly animated at times, honestly, a LOT of the jank from Hogwarts Legacy reminds me off New Vegas and DA Origins kind of jank, funny how the best games are always somewhat janky lol
I am beyond excited for this game as a kid I saw every single movie in theatres on release and this is all I ever asked for game-wise.
Thanks for not including spoilers! Great work with this review, well balanced. Thanks
This video is a banger. The choreography and how everything lines up with what you’re saying at the beginning of the video is spot on. As a fellow UAclipsr I know that’s not done by mistake. Bravo - excellent work! I can’t wait to pick this up!! 😊
That first moment in the dorm room, I felt that too, which grew as I walked around the Slytherin common room. Just, soundscape, much like the movies, invoke emotion whether nostalgic or otherwise, lead me to really love the game ... and I have only played 3 hours so far LOL
On pc or console? I have a ps5 and pc... but im torn because I haven't seen anything on pc performance yet.
Haven't played the game yet, but I already want them to make this into a full-blown trilogy that takes our characters through their 6th and 7th years at Hogwarts.
Honestly I don't think the NPCs are that bad lol Or the glitches, idk why people are always being so tough on games about this when everyone still absolutely adores Skyrim (rightly so) but their NPCs and the world is buggy as heck lol Thank you so much for your review! I cannot wait to play tonight 😍😍
Well…Skyrim is pretty old now. Games should be held to a higher standard now. That being said, I obviously still adore Hogwarts even with the issues.
@RetroRaconteur Fair lol I just mean games like Skyrim lol Big RPGs are almost always buggy and obviously not as honed in animation as linear games in my experience! But I think HL looks incredible! But I am also not a big graphics focused gamer 🤣🤣 I'm a fidelity mode 30 fps give me all the details type so I definitely know it's a preference thing!
I never even thought about turning off the minimap, but I love the idea -- it's going to be way more fun to force you to "figure it out" and even organically stumbling about the castle
For me, the gameplay loop is my primary concern, next is story, and third is graphical fidelity/sound design. If I love playing I’ll keep playing and I’ll play longer if I can enjoy what I’m seeing.
I've never read the books and only watched the movies once. They were fine but definately not life changing. I already have this game pre-ordered and I rarely ever do that. It just looks so good. I'm excited to play and just really enjoy a basically brand new world to me. I hope it lives up to the reviews its getting.
I still feel like spells should have more of a skate mechanic where you have to flick the sticks in a specific motion to cast specific spells.
I can't tell you how much your videos are building my excitement for this game
Keep up the good work!
Hahaha. Thanks, Andre.
Did I see a left-handed option in accessibility settings?! It may not seem like it, but that’s huge!! I’m definitely going to use that.
Here’s hoping they’ll iron out some of the issues with this game, like the NPCs, in a sequel to make an even more ultimate experience 🤞
I think if this game does really well it will be a launchpad to other media like a series based on this world
So glad this game is getting great reviews, can't wait to play this game on release
As a veteran of the Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets games, stationary flat NPCs can just be another form of nostalgia for me.
I just hope that this game does good, financially, so that they'll continue making them. There's so much that could be done in this world. If they keep with a good storyline, this is something that could really grow and become something even more amazing!
Oh it’s going to do very well.
@RetroRaconteur yeah its been the top selling game on steam for over a month now. and im pretty sure its going to stay there for at least another month.
I would say this game will be the most sold game since GTA 5 or Read Dead 2
Tbh I’m not even worried about the story getting spoiled, I don’t want any more secrets spoiled. I want to find as many secrets as I can. Especially in the castle
I enjoy this game a lot. My biggest issue is the dialogue it feels hallow in a sense. For example there's a mission where you meet someone in a room they ask if you brought a book you tell them no and then that's basically the end of the convo unless you select the dialogue option "Why is this room called x" and the person just replies "the book will reveal everything when you bring it." like if why even make that a dialogue option you could have done so many different things to give more back story to the character or something and you just choose to do something that hallow.
Love the Harry games love seeing peeves again since the original games can’t wait play
Can not wait I have the deluxe digital edition preorded. Will try an all in evil Gryffindor first, then probably try all the houses, and different play styles to fully explore this amazing game.
Thank you so much for this. I have been a fan of harry potter for a while and I really want this game, but its quite expensive so I've been trying to find good reviews and this was very helpful. Thank you so much!
Followed your channel & journey with this game for so long mate, so happy for you to have finally played it 🤘 can’t quite believe it’s finally here!
Thanks so much, Joe! It’s been an epic ride.
those clips form the first two games were unbelievable nostalgia trips
This is honestly a hint I have for everyone playing open world games at this point. Turn off the Mini Map. Make it priority one. It's TOO useful and it kind of ruins that sense of discovery.
Brother I almost cried playing also. When I walk through the Hall with the band in different paintings played the song. It sound sooo good. The way the music hits your ears was amazing
I had the exact same moment when first waking up in hogwarts, i just looked around and just kept grinning like a little kid.
As a 30 something that is a very strange but also truly delightful feeling
Having never read any of the books or seen any of the films, I've pre purchased this after seeing various reviews and trailers. Think it will be a fun story to play as I enjoy RPG games in general.
I'm looking so forward to this now. I mean I already was but you just amped me up even more. If I could tell 9 year old me 20 years ago this was the game we had to look forward to, I wouldn't have believed myself. Though I don't think it'll review as a masterpiece of gaming, I think it's going to be one in my own mind and that's all that matters 😍
Honestly can’t wait for this to drop! The Wizarding World was a Big part of my childhood
It came out 4 hours ago
@AmbitiousPanda only for pre order of of deluxe and stuff. Regular release date is feb 10
@AmbitiousPanda That’s early access for preordering the deluxe version. Not really the same
I am not a HUGE Harry Potter fan, I have seen all the movies and like them, but this is the kind of game I love. I would play this game even if I never saw a single Harry Potter movie. lol
This game looks so good and it gives me faith that if they ever make a sequel or any other Harry Potter game it will be amazing.
it gives you ''confidence'' ... not faith ... faith is the wrong word there , it's the wrong word in Any sentence , it's a useless word ,
not equivalent , not in the slightest ...
you Have evidence which Gives you >> confidence
Fantastic video. I look forward to watching you play through the game! I’m so happy it lived up to the hype.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. It's been a long time coming and now we're finally here!
I love it. Was expecting a good game but it's great they is lots including items and gear, wands everything it's great guys. It's like Elden rings meet assassin's but with a wand. I do really wish we had a sword just for close combat.
Never was a potterhead growing up, dont I ever even finished a single book or movie, but there is something intriguing about this game and as a gamer I'm definitely interested in trying this game out
I have a feeling I'm going to play this with my hud set to minimum, just my health bar and spell slots.
You should be made head content creator and info source for the game. Your dedication is commendable.
I haven't even left Hogwarts yet, I am level 15 and have legendary gear. There is SO much to do in this game it's insane. I love how they gave you hundreds of items to find and collect, that's my favorite part. I love collecting. The story is fun and immersive, the world is beautiful. This game is AMAZING!
1:18 That shadow pop in on the little dock house by the water was a bit glaring.
From the gameplay we've been shown this type of thing was probably my only real worry about the game, that there seemed to be some graphics issues where for the most part it looks great but the flying reveals some parts not loading in fast enough or a bit of pop in.
Really happy for Avalanche and the teams that worked on this game.
Avalanche did the Mad Max game a few years back as well and knocked that one out of the park. You could tell they really cared about the source material for that one as well. Very underrated studio. Looking forward to seeing what they do next.
Different studio. The one you’re thinking of did all the Just Cause games. It’s a bit confusing since both studios are under WB
Got PC upgrades arriving today. Just in time for my Deluxe Edition preorder.
I've had a rocky relationship with games for the last 3-4 years. I really hope I will enjoy this game to its absolute fullest.
I'll probably 100% it and start it again.
God, I hope they do add Quidditch.
They've said they won't be adding quidditch
@View Bot source? I know they said it won’t be in at launch but they didn’t rule it out in future updates but I could be wrong.
The issues are very few, and really not too bad at all considering the size of the game, can’t wait to start playing
I haven’t watched the video yet but I will. I just wanted to say even though it might not get read. That I think everyone is sleeping on some of the really cool builds they could do in their next play through. One that I’m definitely going for next is the going to focus heavy on the room of requirement talent tree and stealth while still balancing out with core and spells. No dark arts on my second run. I think the potions mastery with the plants being absolute menaces is more than enough. Not to mention add a bit of stealth into it which is freee. Plus invisibility potion you guys 👀. Lastly the ancient magic 🎉 It seems like it would be a really fun way to play that could potentially convince you that you don’t need to go down the darker path.
I'm excited. I was worried this game would get the star wars, Game of Throne, kingdom hearts 3, or final fantasy 7 treatment. But it looks like it was actually made by folks who love the series and have a strong passion for it
One trend I love in modern gaming is the minimisation of the HUD. Though I love Witcher 3, it defo shows it’s age with the garish mini map and HUD as I’m replaying it now. Elden ring nailed the limited hud too
This is what Arkham Asylum is to the Batman Arkham games. Sets the ground work and makes a great game and if a second releases which is a high possibility being how passionate they are they will fix most if not every criticism and make the second even better.
I pre-ordered the deluxe edition of this game yesterday and the last game i preordered was cyberpunk 2077. So can't say i have amazing luck with pre-orders. But from all the reviews and media out there that I've seen it's pretty good. I hope this will be able to satisfy that dream i had of going to Hogwarts i had when i first read the books. Looking forward to playing it.
Cyberpunk was rushed thats why is took a shit in release day. They should have just waited to release cyberpunk. This game has had plenty of time and with the world hating on this dev team cause of someone not even in the team they didnt even have to postpone the game. (JK Rowlings didnt have any influence on the game lore, quests or characters just an fyi, just the Wizarding world itself cause she kinda does own the rights to that world space, least in name )
@Garthavan I know. The cyberpunk fiasco aside, Hogwarts Legacy seems to be an amazing game and i've only ever heard positive things about it except the odd negative point like the occasional bugs, npc etc. But every game has that on release. Even RDR2 had that I think of it as one of my best played games every. I don't care about JK Rowling at all. Her opinions now don't change the fact that her books were a masterpiece and a game using those as a base will always be welcome by me.
I have not even purchased a game new since Forza Horizon 3, with all the game pass options I truly felt no need to spend extra money on all these games. Two weeks ago after seeing more about this, I couldn't help it and did the same. The fact it's been almost 7 years since I've purchased a game says a lot about how this game charmed me
I need to preorder it still, had nothing but good experiences with cyberpunk lol
I feel like the cyberpunk fiasco, while unfortunate for CDPR, really helped other studios see that it’s better to wait and release a finished game. No company wants to take the hit CDPR did immediately after cyberpunks launch.
Can’t wait to play this! So excited!
Was eagerly waiting for this. Thank you for your honesty and, I hope, unbiased opinion :D
I cannot wait! I will be turning the mini map off for full-on immersion. Thanks for the early review!
your videos are well put together and enjoyable to watch/listen to, just recently started watching your content of Hogwarts Legacy…subscribed!
Wow, thank you for the kind words! And glad you enjoyed the video.
I want to learn more about Ancient Magic! It is so mysterious and us the player have a special connection to all forms of magic.
I'm not particularly a Potter fan, being an older gamer I sorta missed out on the whole book thing. I'm aware of the general ideas of the books.
But I think I'll get this, looks fun and itches an itch.
Enjoy! I think there’s plenty here you’ll appreciate even without being a Potter fan.
I didn’t preorder the deluxe BUT yesterday I was at the shops, traded in Gotham knights and preordered this just the standard version.. I was on the fence about the game, but I know how incredible this game will be, and I do not want to miss out on the beauty of it all.. I hope there’s lots of students that you can talk to and hopefully make some friendships. Definitely would be good to have connections so that you want to return back to the world
I do not think the random NPCs are bug. Some of the students just have existential crisis, so they just stare and do nothing. Not unusual in a highschool. :D
I'm glad that you have a great experience, I hope I will too.
im just happy that the game is a culmination of the HP franchise, seeing the activities, side quest, platforming, and puzzle solving like in the OG HP titles PS1 and PS2.
the 3rd person HP vibe send me way back Deathly Hollows.
I walked all the way to hogsmeade, my thumb is tired but now was it worth it, such a beautiful game
I can’t wait to fly around on a hippogriff! I am curious as to how to find the hippogriff. Also now I can’t wait to Binge play the game!
I've really enjoyed the build up to this game but always had this nagging sensation that it may be fun to explore but ultimately a bit crap.
The first 5 minutes of this video have completely allayed my fears on that front. To hear that mission variety is good and that despite some issues that it's *fun* to play is exactly what I hoped. I don't expect it to be the best game ever created but hearing this makes it sound possible that it could potentially be a favourite.
Great video, thanks for the content!
Thanks for the kind words, Jake! Hope you enjoy the game.
I felt the same cause the Dev has a terrible back catalogue
Imagine a goblet of fire game where u can choose ur school. Compete for the trizward cup. And maybe add in some quidditch. That should be the sequel. Already have the enormous world. Build up the other 2 schools and let's go!
You just need Accio for that Merlin trial, cast revelio and it should be easy to figure out.
So pumped for this game that I've basically stopped playing my other games over the last month lol
Curious your thoughts on how replayable the game is? How impactful is the good vs bad and can I plan to play twice with each or should I really just go all out the first time?
Can't really speak on that yet. I'm only 20 hours in and can still tell I have a lot left to do.
Was lucky to receive the game on Saturday and have so far enjoyed every minute.
As the best Harry Potter fan, this is good news; leaving a like and a comment so this small channel grows a bit.
Not a big Harry Potter fan but, well it's set in a world of magic and I love me magic. Magic is my go to in any Fantasy RPG.
I got emotional hearing your words about the experience towards the end. This was a great video thankyou
Glad you enjoyed it, Jadin!
I'm really tempted to not have the map on because I want to explore the castle and world freely and find way own way around it. but I also want to find all the collectables and having the map will help highlight them easier
I'm finding them just fine without it on. I may turn it on after beating the game when I'm just wrapping up trophies and all of the collectables though.
@RetroRaconteuryou can turn it off?? Finally devs adding the features we want!!
Retro are you going to be streaming the game tomorrow? Now that there's all of a sudden twitch drops for the game I'd figure you'd be apart of it. Also, thanks for all of the content leading up to the game. You were the only creator I trusted to watch this entire experience and I loved every video. Hope you continue making passionate content. Again thank you!
Thank you so much for the kind words! Yes, plenty of streams planned this week. The first one will be tonight here on UAclips at 8pm ET. Keep an eye on twitter/discord for the other times.
@RetroRaconteur awesome I'll be there! 👍
Hey Retro this will answer your question....I am NOT a fan of the Harry Potter world. Meaning I never really got into it. However Im a 51 year old huge RPG gamer and I haven't been this excited to play an RPG since Skyrim. Its just full of so much magical moments, charm and has that RPG vibe that coming from someone not following the Harry Potter world can honestly say it looks fantastic!
This is cool to hear! Hope you have fun with it my dude
just a thought, have you ever tried red dead redemption 2? would blow ur world away
@tt tt yep!
I'm in the same boat as you! It's so cool to see a video game adaptation of a book series like this, and because the game and it's world are adapted from a book series, It'll probably be much more fleshed out than most in terms of lore and such. It'll be fun to have all the references and little details go over my head and later understand them, maybe! I also really love video games that have school environments, and I'm hyped to play this one even though Harry Potter wasn't ever something that really appealed to me too much, now it does. If I like the game enough, maybe I'll go read the books?
@moibuspm well I’m glad you didn’t miss out on that one ! 😂
