UBOAT
UBOAT is a simulator of a submarine from WWII era, yet different than all you have seen so far. It is a survival sandbox with crew management mechanics while its primary theme is life of German sailors. The boat is their home, but it can become their grave at any time.
In UBOAT you control the crew in order to control the boat. You look after their physical and mental health, because if the sailors are hungry, tired and their spirit is low, there’s no chance of winning even a skirmish.
Survival
The extensive damage system is a foundation of the game's survival elements. Unprecedented situations are bound to happen as the effect of received damage, testing player's creativity and ability to stay calm. You can try to save the whole crew or leave someone behind, to save the others.
While your ship travels through the open seas, you will often find yourself being on your own. Use your management skills to spend resources taken on the trip optimally and in special cases try to recover them on the sea, by asking your allies for the help... or by looting wreckages of enemy ships.
Disable unnecessary devices, to keep your accumulators running for longer.
Tell your crew to stay in their bunks to preserve oxygen.
If crew's morale is low - play with them a session of Skat or play music from nearby radio stations, to fortify their hearts.
Kriegsmarine career
During the playthrough you will receive assignments from the Kriegsmarine headquarters. They are never linear and you may receive additional orders during them or face unexpected problems.
Brave completion of assignments from the headquarters is rewarded with additional budget for the unit under your command and with acceptance of your growing reputation as an u-boat's skipper. You will need that, to upgrade your ship and keep up with enemy's technological advances.
Upgrade your boat for the rewarded funds.
Receive additional permissions for the reputation points.
Buy new equipment - new torpedo types, sonar decoys, CO2 absorbers and much more.
Send your officers on special tasks in the headquarters to, among other things, speed up a research of new technologies.
Accurate simulation
Game's simulation elements are very realistic, but that never comes at a cost of gameplay quality. Despite extensive simulation elements, UBOAT can be played like a regular game and complex matters can be learned later to become a better skipper for the commanded unit.
Even small things like the influence of ballast in each compartment on the ship's trim (tilt) or Earth's curvature are faithfully reproduced in the game.
Perfection can be achieved in many ways. Prove your management skills and swiftly assign work to your officers to speed things up. If, on the other hand, you think that if something needs to be done, it's better to do that on your own - sit behind the periscope, hydrophone or 88 mm deck gun and take matters in your own hands!

Just reading the title of this video reminded me of the story where in WW1, some of the Australian Army troops got bored, so they decided to steal a German tank and take it back to Australia as a trophy. We still have it on display in Brisbane.

Yeah at this point, I’m sure a stealing mere German tank aren’t even 10% of what these guy are capable of doing if they have enough free time on their hands.
@Erich von Donitz It got stuck in the sand and was left by it's crew. So the Australians really didn't "steal" it, they just made the effort to take it back with them, not being good for anything else

I did use to take 5 min breaks at work with total relaxation and eyes closed during the day, my boss caught me many times doing it not saying anything just giving me a disapproving look :) But I was getting the job done better and faster then other he had on that job so I guess he was happy even if it seemed a bit strange to be sleeping in the middle of a busy day :)

It's 6 miles. But you can do it in 4 if you're fast.

@P Actually, if you are going at relativistic speeds, everything around you seems to be shorter. So if you are moving at ~ 0.3 Gm/s, 13281km can seem like half a mile...

Imagine being part of a submarine crew in battle and your captain looks at a torpedo rushing toward the boat and says "What do you suppose that is right there?"
...when the ships were ramming you... i thought "oh! so historically accurate!" because that was a viable strat. U-94 was rammed then boarded by dudes barefoot, shirtless and in shorts. fun read. so! yeah... ramming speed!
Honestly, this makes me want to get this game and hope defection becomes an actual mechanic. Like, it looks like it could be a lot of fun and it'd be interesting to play a game that actually let's you change sides.
I kind of hope that this is just how he talks in real life all the time, with no pauses, just a constant flow of whatever is going on around him.
They should totally add a 'defect' option

Seeing as 75%> of the U-boot crews died at some point during the war, I doubt you'd live long enough to explain that you were defecting lmao
@METRO it still might be a nice thing to add. maybe have it be its own little game mode or difficulty setting, not really historically accurate, but just for some kind of challenge.

Just as a little side note, the U in U-Boot stands for "Untersee" which translates to "Under sea" and Boot meaning (small) Ship. So its a ship thats under water/sea.
Sometimes we germans arent so complicated after all. Also we name literally anything "stuff": The words for Plane, Lighter, and Toy would be literally "flying stuff" "fire stuff" and "playing stuff".
That peek under the hood of the German language is almost as funny as this whole video. Danke. (I don't know how to type umlauts)

As someone who has watched the director's cut of Das Boot several times, I have to say that his style of playing is morbidly and historically accurate.

The cross section view kind of reminded me of bomber crew. Also, with those bigger flack guns and mounted artillery, most of the time it took multiple people to operate during world war 2.

Btw ramming a U boat was one of the methods to sink an U boat. One of the most used methods actually as there were alot of ships not capable to battle an U boat any other way
