These irons looks awesome! I felt that Taylormade took a wrong step in terms of looks for the SIM2 from the og SIM. They've definitely corrected that with the Stealth!
I would love to see a vid of you testing them against previous models in the same category like the SIM and SIM2. Most of the time the year-on-year change is almost negligible in this category IMO. So if you could get the SIM2 or SIM for half the price it would be a much better deal.

For me being a very high handicapper, I can't justify spending the money on these clubs. For what they are and what they do, I dont think I can say they are too expensively priced overall. Just too expensive for me who just isn't good enough for that price! Great review Rick!

As a 25 handicapper, I was fitted for these Taylormade Stealth's yesterday, Rick. I do have a slight natural fade with my previous Cobra F Max Airspeed irons. I have never hit as straight as I did yesterday since 1985 in the blades era, I am 64 now. You are right about the wedges. They come off a bit quick, as Sophie Walker pointed out. She is suggesting an in-between wedge to compensate, a gap wedge etc. Thanks for this video.

I'm still at the skill level where I have to be concerned about the risk of accidentally getting a perfect hit and sending the ball way too far. but that's also a steep price to pay.

@A B he won't learn using super game improvement irons, using a forged iron will force you to get better as well as the smaller head you hit the center more. And won't need to buy new clubs after he gets better.

Thanks for a great video. I went to the local golf shop after watching this, and a couple of other reviews. After trying several different iron brands and shaft combinations I ended up choosing the TaylorMade Stealth with Graphite Shaft/Sr. Flex. During the fitting I just kept coming back to these clubs. They felt great, were incredibly accurate, and the distance was awesome. I consistently hit the 7 iron between 145-150 yds. with an average deviation from center line of about 14ft. The other clubs I tried did not even come close, or at least not for me. I ordered the 6-PW, AW, SW with 1/2" shortened and 2up on lie angle. I can't wait for them to get here after the April 1 ship date. Thanks again for such a detailed review and I will be sure to subscribe!

I've just had a fitting with these and other irons inc the Wilson D9 forged, TM 770, Callaway Rogue st and Ping 425 against my old M3 irons with xp100 shafts. With the Stealth irons and recoil dart shafts my average total distance went up from 138 to 160yds on Trackman. It's difficukt to look past those numbers.

@Karl_ I'm jealous! I'm still waiting to find out when I can get my hands on them. They're 2 degrees stronger than my M3 irons but at my level (currently 11.8) I need all the help I can get as golf's difficult enough as it is without giving distance away

I've just bought a set, I would on average have been 150-155 with my 7i old Callaway X20's. I was hitting 168-174 on Trackman with the 7i Stealth stiff shaft. Love them already!

Thanks for the great review, I bought the SIM2's last year, really like them however the rubber insert on the club head (to soften the feel) collapsed into the club head on 2 of the irons, sent them back and had them replaced but I can see this happening to others as well, poor design in my opinion.

There have been very few developments in irons since Karsten changed it all with the Ping Eye 2. The Hogan Edge (perimeter-weighted forged iron), mullti-metal clubheads, graphite shafts, and that's about it. (Multi-metal heads allow manufacturers to move the CG so they can take off loft and still generate playable launch angles.) That's about it. But wait, there's one more....
Single-length irons. I can't understand why they haven't taken off, especially with amateur golfers. (Professionals and top amateurs want to play what they've always played.) Single-length are so easy to learn, so easy to hit, and have incredible advantages.
I think the main problem is that pros aren't going to switch to them. The one pro that plays them--BDC--played them long before he came onto the national scene. In fact, he's responsible for two of the three serious single-length brands out there. Edel was the company that made his first set. When he turned pro, he signed with Cobra, who came out with a single-length set (and many variations and updates since). The other is Wishon, which I've been playing for more than 5 years. (First the Sterling, now the EQ1-NX.)
Some UAclips golf stars reviewed the Sterlings, but they've been pretty silent on the newer EQ1-NX. That is frustrating. Since Rick is such a powerhouse on UAclips, I would hope he wouldn't leave this category behind, especially because of its advantages for average players. (I'm single-digit, but I'm not going to win any championships.)

I made a set last year in similar lofts I used Ping G425 4 5 and 6 irons and then I210s in 6-9 and the Vokey 50 54 and 60. I have figured that even a mid handi player can hit players irons in the higher range and it has helped massively. Controls the gaps well but offers massive forgiveness in the low end. The way they offer clubs these days you can buy single irons or custom sets and taking advantage of it has been a winner. THANKS FOR THE IDEA RICK and these would be fine irons for those harder to hit numbers too

Great video and thorough review. Thinking seriously about upgrading to these from my RSI1s. One thing reviewers don't address especially with game improvement irons is can you still work the ball. As an 18, I need lots of help with the mishits but played long enough and have a modicum of skill so that I play (try to) some significant draws/fades around trees/obstacles/doglegs. On the par three I kept muttering for you to try to fade that in, especially as the clubs seemed to have a draw bias. The ultimate question for me on them is, can the mid-high handicapper work the ball with these clubs?

I used to get the “hot shot” all the time with my old irons and then switch to a Mizuno JPX tour set. Iron performance improved vastly just by eliminating that shot. I’ve always been one that hit a lot of greens but my proximity to the hole was terrible with the more forgiving irons

High-handicapper who had a fitting this morning. Tried Cobra Ltdx, Ping G425 then these Taylormade Stealth irons. The Cobra and Ping were pretty similar in terms of numbers and performance, with the Ping just edging the Cobra in terms of feel.
The Stealth irons were just ridiculous in comparison. I was getting higher ball speeds, higher spin, and better accuracy by some margin. The average carry was 25yds longer for the Stealth, the longest I hit 161yds in total (7i). These also felt the best of the three irons to handle and to hit.
Now I just have to wait for them to be built and delivered before I can see how much better I'm hitting.

Favorite time of the year to watch Rick! I'm glad they are good but no, I won't be buying them. I'm frustrated with mostly with companies making a 5 iron with the loft of a 3 iron. I don't want to continually keep adding a wedge to my bag to make up the difference in gapping. I am interested in the P790's though because they are almost identical in loft to my current clubs so here's my question Rick. If you had to pick a set for the bag, would you go with the 790's or the Stealth?

I’ve just bought a set of P790s and I’m looking forward to them coming in. Went with the full set from 4 iron all the way down to the gap wedge, since gap wedge is still mostly used as a full swing club. I don’t usually hit sand wedge or lob wedge full swing, and those are the clubs I use most for chips. I hope the irons still do okay on bump and run shots though. I want that touch and feel.

Thanks for all the content Rick. Love your stuff. I have been running TaylorMade Clubs for a long time now and love them. I have gotten used to the extra length and been fine with it. However, the price at $850 GBP is steep! We will have to see what they price them at here in the US, but at todays exchange rate it would cause me to consider other clubs before jumping on at that price. For now I’ll keep playing the M6s I have in my bag and see what happens.

I don't think I could ever wrap my head around switching to a set of irons where the 4-iron has a stronger loft than my current 5-wood and the 5-iron is identical to my current 3 hybrid.

    • Reilly Walker
      Reilly Walker 4 місяці тому

It's all marketing. If you stamp a 5 instead of a 3 on a 3-iron head and then stick a 5-iron shaft into it, you suddenly have a "5-iron" that goes farther than your old one. That's basically what happened with Cobra's Speedzone irons. Mark Crossfield tested them and, if I remember correctly, carried the 5-iron 235 yards-likely as far or farther than many amateurs carry their fairway woods.

Looks like a combo of M1 with M2, and also M3 and M4. Those clubs were very forgiving, however I did have alot of Hot shots. Where I would fly the green by 10 yards. Also, punching out from under trees or hazards the ball absolutely flies. It was hard to control distance with the M series clubs when punching out. I am a P790 fan now. If you look at the sole of these new irons and compare them to the M series you will understand what I mean. Like they meshed them together. They were great clubs, but I wanted more control to work the ball.

I use the RAD irons and the 8i just isn’t an option around the green. It’s too hard to get right, PW or back to a normal wedge is essential. Makes sense that Stealth has the same compromise.

  • chrossphyre

Frankly for my play, I would have gladly taken any of those finesse shots at the green. I can putt but my short game is ugly bordering on brutal. My bias is generally open or right of the line so these clubs could actually help me straighten that out some. Seems like a decent match until I hit that price: 850GBP is $1500+ CAD when taxes are included. For that I expect Taylormade to value add these irons with an obsequious bag monkey raised with the only desire to caddy and maintain clubs, along with the first year's supply of monkey rations.

@The Regular Golfer Right now I have an ancient set of Power Built Fuzzy Zoeller clubs. The driver broke some years ago so I replaced it with a Spalding Titanium that I picked up at a liquidation store for $65 bucks. These clubs have been used and abused way past their best buy date and it's time to replace them and get back in the game.

I’m back and forth in the price. In the US this is nearly $1100 which I may as well go get a “non-beginner” set custom for for a couple hundred more dollars. I do agree though, they look great and performance seems great all things considered. Great video, Rick!

I think for the golfer that these are intended to be made for, the price seems a bit much. Hard to convince an entry level/weekend golfer to pay that much for only 7 clubs. Just one guys opinion though! Still think the irons looks pretty nice!

Rick, I think you're on to something about higher lofted clubs being too strong. My 2019 M2 9 iron goes like 155-160 if i flush it. And I've overhit the green on many occasion. Looking forward to getting some nice blades in a year or two when my swing gets a little better.

    • QuickStang5o

Game improvement irons for a single hanicapper? I'd imagine a single handicap player would benefit more from a forged iron, with less loft, and more shot shaping capabilities.

👏👏👏 Got to say Rick I think that has been one of your best Iron performance reviews you have done , very informative , I agree with your statement about the Driver iron sets and think they are aimed at the player where money is no object and not bothered about changing irons every season, but I do like the look of them slightly like p790 with strong lofts

I think that these irons will help out a lot of golfers with a lower swing speed to help get that distance that they want, but these irons are the exact opposite for fitting my game. Reason one as Rick said is the left miss, which I do struggle with, and two I already have the problem of hitting my irons randomly farther on good strikes. Rick I would love to see a video on how to compress the ball correctly and not to over compress the ball where you are just cranking the loft down on the club. Keep it up Rick!

They look and seem to perform great… but as they’re aimed at the average/improver/mid to high handicapper golfer, that price tag is simply too high. Most people in that bracket won’t like it for that reason, unless they have cash to throw around or are very serious about their golf!

Your Def right about the ball jumping on strong lofted clubs. My Apex forged 21' 7-9 irons were easily 20 yards inconsistent on perfect strikes. Im no pro but like you said, if you got that 175ish shot with no room to miss you have a good chance to go long. Happened to me quit a bit at my local course. So much so that I hit the ball into the parking lot ,up hill over the green, on a 169ish yard shot to a back pin location with an 8 Iron during league play. THat ball went 185+

I decided to watch this video at 1.5x faster playback speed as I was in a hurry, very amusing watching Rick jabber away like he's all excited and buzzing with loads of energy. Speedy review. My only criticism of TM clubs is they change them pretty much every year with a minor facelift but ultimately they are the same irons. As we saw on some of the video's you did back in the summer Rick when you bought some old second hand clubs you smashed it which just reinforces the point it's not the clubs it's the player, whilst it's not a good idea to give a blade iron to a beginner it's true to say if you are a good golfer you'll be able to hit pretty much any iron well. What's the best set of irons? the ones you like playing with the most.

Nice review, Rick! I'm currently playing PXG 0211s, which are much the same design as these. I mostly chip with 9 iron, PW, or a Cleveland 48º CBX2 wedge. I've found the exact opposite with the short game to what you found. Once you get used to the lofts and the hotter face, they play just fine around the greens, and even help on off-center hits. But of course you need to practice with them and get used to them.
If a player is coming from blades and muscle backs and is just hitting a few chips with a GI iron and comparing them to those player's clubs, then obviously they're going to feel slightly off - they're far different from what you're used to. But the principle behind the body and face construction of these GI irons holds true with short shots just as with full shots: that they retain ball speed better all across the face. In practical terms this means that if you catch a chip a bit far out on the toe (which I often do) the ball doesn't come up nearly as short as it would with a cavity back iron. I also play a set of 0211 ST blades, and while I can't deny that the "feel" is better around the greens with those, my scrambling stats are the same with both sets.
As far as the occasional "hot shot," I airmail the green sometimes with blades, too. But at my pretty moderate swing speed, a long miss isn't generally much further off than a short one, and often ends up in a better position, as most holes have the majority of trouble in front of the hole and to the sides. And, hey...without these occasional flyers, we wouldn't be able to brag to our buddies about the HUGE distance we hit a 7-iron...that one time...downhill...downwind...in Colorado.
