@Curtis Behnke Yes I agree, Nets sounds like a toxic organization or else at least 1 star out of the big 3 would have wanted to stay. We don't know what happening behind the scenes, but I favor Kyrie just from own personal business experiences.

Hard to say because we don't know what's happening behind the scenes. Yes, Kyrie is the common denominator, but this is a business and he needs to do what is best for himself.

@dscott Yeah it is a genius FINANCIAL move, but I'm still concerned and I know I should try to be more confident, but either way they aren't probably going to make the finals, and they most definitely aren't winning it. They need one more person which is why I think the brunson thing was so detrimental to them.

I understand the Boston point but as a fan of the Celtics there was a 4 year gap where they were mediocre to good, and it's not like they've won a title yet. Yes, now they're better than they ever were with Kyrie but it was looking realll iffy for a minute. Overall I'm extremely happy with where the Celtics are obvi, but subtracting Kyrie did not immediately make us a contender or anything.

@Ike Jon-Ubabuco if hayward and kyrie didnt get injured that first year, that team wouldve functioned way different from the next year.
Hayward is gonna feel some type about his role because he was an all star, kyrie is gonna feel some type of way because he was there to be the first option and leader and now JT and JB feel some type of way because they were 1 game away from the finals. They were all competing against eachother instead of competing with eachother.

@James Worthy yeah no. The celtics with IT were just as much of a title contender as the 2015 hawks. Youre never gonna win anything with IT as your first option.

    • PingPing
      PingPing Місяць тому

@baller0724 The situation is too nuanced to only look at results. They were one of the best teams without hayward untill kyrie got injured and had season ending surgery. The young guys had 0 pressure. No one would care if the celtics didnt make the playoffs, because they lost hayward and kyrie. Pressure is hugely underestimated what influence it has on players, its what seperates great players from the rest. The 2nd year was a recipe for disaster. Kyrie played like he wanted to be the leader and first option while JB and JT played like they didnt need kyrie and hayward.

Good post like always but another issue is really interesting that so far was not really addressed much by anybody: Would be good to hear how they will make it work. What plays do they run? How do they share the ball? 2 guys that need the ball and have the ball a lot and penetrate and are not used to catch and shoot etc. Obviously Doncic is a hell smart player that played under different circumstances and in different roles with different sytems and co-players in Europe so guess he can adjust but it will still take Kyrie to also adjust. Not sure the egos work, not sure 2 ball--dominat guys work. SD and Powell worked in combination with Luka. The off-court stuff ill leave aside with Kyrie and also if its worth it considering the risk that Kyrie will not sign an extension with Dallas - in that case Dallas is fukced. I think actually a great catch and shoot guy or big man would have made much more sense for Dallas but yeah if it works like LBJ and Kyrie then thats a an ingenius move but LBJ and what he was then is still different from Luka and also Kyrie now is different personality and maybe so to say authoritywise. Anyways would be glad if you could go a bit in depth how you think it will work and play out on the court

On the Mavs not paying Brunson, obviously no idea what went on internally for the Mavs and how much they wanted or may have undervalued him...but the Knicks literally broke the rules to get him so not sure it is entirely fair to blame the Mavs for losing him.

    • Baltej Bains
      Baltej Bains Місяць тому

@Ryan Muller tldr. I already know the details around the brunson situation quite well, so there's not point trying to convince me that the mavs did not bungle that situation. And this move to get kyrie is an act of desperation by the mavs to keep luka somewhat content, because we all know he's frustrated with this team rightfully so. Could it work out? Sure but I am skeptical. And unfortunately it does seem like a rental, a really short rental at that.

    • Ryan Muller
      Ryan Muller Місяць тому

@Baltej Bains My apologies - I did get something slightly off there. I was recalling from an article I read at the time that presented it as though Brunson couldn't be traded if he got extended. Having done some more reading now, there was no rule prohibiting the trade. However, there was the so-called "poison pill" clause the kicks in when you have a player who signs an extension to their rookie contract but hasn't yet started the extension. When trading such a player, the team receiving the player treats their salary as being the average of the current and extended salaries. The team sending the player, however, just treats the player as worth their current salary. That means that the receiving team basically has to have cap space or a sufficiently large trade exception for the trade to proceed, or a third team with one of those needs to get involved. So, extending Brunson wouldn't have made it impossible to trade him, but it would have dramatically narrowed the number of potential trade partners. In the end, extending Brunson would have made it nearly impossible to use him as a trade asset, hence justifying delaying signing him to an extension until after the deadline if you didn't think the team was already good enough to contend.
The Mavs did offer him an extension after the deadline, but by that point Brunson decided to go to free agency and not sign the extension. Can I understand him being annoyed with the team not committing to him and exploring trading him? Sure. But, had he still wanted the same extension available before the deadline after the deadline, the extension was there. Brunson changed his mind about the extension, and ultimately then decided to sign with the Knicks before even talking to the Mavs in free agency.
I'm not saying I like the outcome. That said, I can imagine the world where, if I'm sitting in Dallas' front office, I make the same decisions they do around Brunson. I look at my roster going into the trade deadline, I see the possibility of packaging a great young asset with some salary (e.g. THJ) to swing a major upgrade, and I don't want to dramatically restrict my trade options for that package until I explore what's on offer. Then, after the deadline, when said player no longer wants that deal, the only option left is to try to convince him in free agency. Free agency arrives, the player leaves without even having a meeting with you, and there's not much else you can do but try to pick up the pieces.
Now, to be clear, I don't think this front office is faultless. The McGee signing was atrocious - maybe I could have understood it as a 1 year + team option or partially guaranteed second year, but 3 years for a guy his age filling a role that the NBA has been drifting away from is a terrible move. But, when it comes to Brunson, unless they had some sense that he might not want an extension after the deadline if he wasn't offered it beforehand, I think they made reasonable moves that just ended badly (similar to Brooklyn's current situation - it was worth a shot, it just didn't work).

      Heath Flagtvedt Місяць тому

I also think Mavs respected the fact that Brunson wanted to be in NYC with his Dad.

      sean swisher Місяць тому

I mean yeah the Knicks talked to him a little early and broke the rules. But I think its clear as day he wanted to go to the Knicks. So I don't think the tampering really made a difference.

    • Baltej Bains
      Baltej Bains Місяць тому

@Ryan Muller Yes he could be traded after signing an extension. No rules prohibit this. Also, they coulda gave him the extension after the trade deadline last season. No rules prohibit that either. A 4 year 55 mil contract made sense for a rookie guard that showed he could play next to luka, and was one of the most efficient guards from the field in his last 2 seasons with the mavs. The upside was clearly there, and the risk was negligible for such a cheap contract extension. They bungled that situation. Now they made a desperate move to get kyrie cuz luka is frustrated with this team.

But the thing is when the help defense comes, he could not pass it to someone who can make their own shots. Brunson and kyrie are bucket getters. The trade we could made in summer. They didn't make abs price went up. This time they didn't make trade because of Austin Reeves and Max Christie. Rob Pelinka didn't want to make the trade for real

JJ is right in terms of guys being devoted to basketball and being disappointed. however, i’m not sure the broken relationship between Kyrie and the organization applies here. Kyrie loves hoops, we know that, but Kyrie felt slighted for whatever reason. hard to only care about just hoops when there’s so many politics that are involved as well.

  • Boo Kaufman
    Boo Kaufman Місяць тому +2

It's so hard to know how to feel as a Mavericks fan we just got a top-15 player to help Luka Doncic try to win a title but is this the one we wanted. I understand that he's physically the best player available in this year's and from just a winning losing perspective he'll probably end up helping the team but for how long? I know that it clears up a ton of cap space if he walks next year but tons of teams have had cap space and nothing to spend it on. In the player empowerment era there's no way to know that just having the money will get a guy to come to your town this could go from Lucca with a pretty good team to Luka having to be like Steph Curry was when everybody was injured 1 star in a bunch of Mid or worse players. That's if he walks and they have all that money but there's nobody who wants to come to Dallas. It's not necessarily an easy thing to get somebody to come and play on a team where one guy dominates the ball so much I think the Mavericks will have a rough week or two and then they'll be as good as anybody in the league for a while. But unless there's more moves coming this is a pretty thin team. It was already a pretty and now they've lost Dorian finney-smith and some draft I don't count Spencer has lost because Kyrie makes up for that. I just would rather have any other top 20 guy than Kyrie besides maybe James harden who has the same attitude about team basketball with less politics.

    • Dave Percy
      Dave Percy Місяць тому

Yea our team is currently a glass cannon, now quite literally all offense and no defense. Which means Luka and Kyrie have to work 100% of the time because teams will be able to get whatever they want.

Offensively Luka can play very unselfishly and both can play catch and shoot. I think with their offensive skill set they can figure it out. Will definitely miss Dorian Finney-Smith locking up the best player we’re facing.

This isn't really as bad a fit as people are trying to make it out to be, everyone's been complaining about Dallas not having a legit 2nd option for so long, and they now have that with Kyrie who is legit one of the best shotcreators in basketball. The real problem lies on the defensive end, Dallas just lost Finney Smith who's prolly the only guy on their team playing good defense, they gotta address their defensive issues if they are really serious about contending.

Correct me if I am wrong but why Kyrie should not ask for max contract?! He is the closer in the team, top 5 clutch players in NBA, top 5 pg ever, best handler ever, best finisher off the glass ever, a champion and a real FMVP. Is it because he missed some games this year and last year with NO FAULT on his behalf?! Banning him from games for comments on a documentary and being unvaxed is NOT a basketball issue and it's on the Nets. It's sad that 99% of media (including jj) and many (stupid) fans don't want to admit it.

In this situation only one question is relevant, what if those who don't believe in Kyrie and Luka are very wrong. What if Kyrie surprises all of basketball fans who are pessimistic and doubtful, what if Kyrie finally found the right teammate for himself who is humble enough to play with him, what if he found in Luka a real teammate who will never ask, who is the number one, or who is the number two, and together they will solve everything that time brings them. Maybe Kyrie founded someone who really listens to him and understands what he's saying. Doubts about the defense are not necessarily a problem because the trade is still happening, so not everything is finished. I sincerely hope that there is at least some truth in what I wrote, I really want it immensely, because at first, when I heard about the trade, I had mixed feelings, part of me was sad and the other part of me was very happy, so I hope that the side which makes me happy will win.

literally everyone remembers that. also, that is years and years ago. even at the time before the trade to Dallas, people were aware that he was injury ridden and a lot of people were also aware that the fact NY traded the "unicorn" for basically 2 feature first round picks was a telltale. It was a 7 player swap, but outside Porzingis it was pretty much a wash, nothing spectacular. So yeah, if someone trades the unicorn for 2 picks (where you dont know what that even does for you) you know something is wrong.

i like kyrie because i think he's setting a good example by showing younger players textbook "bad cases" (e.g. vaccination situation, "anti-Semitic" post) and examples and by not being afraid to stir up controversy. he stands up for what he believes and pays the cost for it. it's like two great lessons for the young players: if you stand up, this is what may happen; this is the cost, so you can get a sense of what the price of integrity is these days.
a lot of young men, especially athletes, don't really get much of training or support when it comes to navigating organizations or media or situations. if you continue to only examine him through an individual or athletic lens, you fail to appreciate how he's giving a lot of useful lessons throughout the league and to also black men handling a largely white male dominated media system.
i also think he's like one of the only three players in the league that other players wish they could do the moves that he pulls off. im not anywhere close to that level of hooping but i bet u, once you take away all that talk of nba, organizations, politics, career---almost every hooper out there looks forward to playing against/with him just to see what crazy combos and moves he'll pull out of his bag.
doncic plus kyrie is going to be a lot of fun to watch, sadly, most of the best moments will be contained in the practice facility. so let's just hope we can get a few awesome highlights before he bounces again lol
