Glad we were able to team up on this one 😂 Well done sir!
Glad we got your input on this. It was definitely needed to get a further understanding of why the product is flawed. 🫡
ok
W Mike
Oh, hey, you're that guy from the UAclipss (who I don't follow because a little too zany but have learned several things from here and there) 👍
Nice theory about masks, unfortunately in real RCTs even in trained individuals they offer no significant protection against viruses.
If Dyson wants a challenge, they should create a silent leaf blower.
@D oc auto pile feature
best product to be made.
Windless fan next
excellent idea. or a leaf VACUUM (which mulches them up and deposits them into a bag)!
Not hard to make.
The tech is interesting and is probably ahead of its time, but i think this would be a great idea if they are able to integrate it right into motorbike helmets. If the filtration could be built into the helmets, you would have a much larger target audience.
Have fun getting chapped lips all the time
huh?@Gunt Wastelander
@Gunt Wastelander?
Integrating air filtration into motorbike helmets without creating a perfect seal would prove flawed. If the filtration system cannot prevent pollutants from entering the helmet it will not provide the intended benefits in terms of improving air quality for the rider.
A noise cancelling headphone while driving a motorbike????
This should be the template for how unbiased product reviews should be done. Take a bow MKBHD.
Facts!
I think the active filtering idea is good but they should have gone with a dedicated mask instead of mixing it with headphones. Something that actually quells bad smells with a proper seal would be neat.
And if they went for a cyberpunk look it probably would have sold well too
Ah, the dystopian (dys-on? 🤨) future is nearing upon us. I love it
But that exists, it's called a powered air purifying respirator. You can get a reasonable full face one for about a thousand bucks.
the razer mask was almost like that... the idea for it was at least better than whatever dyson tried to do
@Jordan Rodrigues tells of that "expert" Marques has brought, right? The one telling us that blowing purified air in your face is something unheard of, and not some industry best practice.
you’re hands down my favorite product reviewer ever. you buy the products so you’re not beholden. you’re smart, focused, and engaging to watch. you’re fair and detailed even with absurd stuff like this. best of all, i learn things (in general, not just about the items). i hope you never stop doing these. ❤️
my confusion is why didn't they just make a motorcycle helmet which cools the driver with a fan, has decent quality headphones and somewhat filters the breathing air? That way the pricepoint for the materials makes more sense and there's an actual target audience. Also that would help with the weight issue as a helmet will already be heavy. AND it could actually have a seal.
because putting on headphone while riding a motorbike is extremely dangerous.
@Burry Bondz have you not tried noise cancelling headphones with ambient sound passthrough? Motorcyclists wear headphones all the time
At this point, why not just replicate Ironman's helmet? 😂
- you have AI
- screen you could view/control
- air filtration/mask
- oxygen supply/converter and etc
I think the Loss Leader idea is spot on here. As soon as I saw your thumbnail I thought these headphones looked stupid and impractical but wanted to see this mess. While you were giving a breakdown on Dyson the company it made me think hmm... I could use a new vaccum and there has to be a reason people spend soo much on them. I have never in my life felt compelled to navigate to Dyson's website. Now I'm looking through their product catalog considering the bladeless fan.
DONT get the bladeless fan. I’ve never encountered one in real life but apparently it’s just an expensive gimmick with less airflow and more noise than conventional fans.
@Omar B Good call. I watched a few review videos on that fan and every video has said the same thing.
@Too Damn Tall The Hot + Cool fans are incredibly reliable, I used to burn out space heaters too often before I got the Dyson. I have an older one without the HEPA filter and a newer one with a filter. The old one has countless hours operating in hot and cold modes and works like new still. Money well spent.
@Aaron V. Thank man. The biggest complaints I hear about the fans are they're louder than normal fans with worse airflow. What are your thoughts?
Wow, the most in-depth, honest, and valuable review I think I've ever seen before. Excellent sound quality, you provided all the necessary (and even interesting unnecessary) information in an informative and intelligent way, and you even brought in an expert for analysis. I hate review channels but you have earned a subscriber.
Marques might be one of the most unbiased reviewers ever. Much respect Sir
Bringing in an "expert" that has not heard of the powered purifiers (PAPR) being the industry standard is not what I would call an "unbiased review".
I commend Dyson for putting this out in the market where most would shut it down in an instant. Makes the world more fun and interesting. I hope they learned alot in the process and make good use of it in their future products.
They would shut it down because it's a bad idea, it doesn't work, and it's a waste of money.
If the fans cooled my ears, I'd be enticed.
Wait till you find out about air and wind
@T2112 I think he means while wearing the headphones because they cover your ears and honestly make your ears warm after a while
Seems like an easy enough mod. You can see light through the ear cup, all you would have to do is block the vent hole, perforate the chamber between the fans and the earcups and remove the filters for extra airflow. Filter not needed cause ears don't breathe.
Keep that idea to yourself, you could easily become a billionaire
@Mariano Vidal Melendez I just patented this!
this is honestly so cool. I love the amount of design effort put into this concept!
Applause for you having the courage to not only wear these in public, but to test them in a Porta-potty.
I'm sorry but I have never seen someone just destroy a product so thoroughly. Amazing. I subscribed
Dyson should focus on making those floor lamps more affordable/reasonable, like 4 units for $800 cause wow...I hope they provide life time warranty for bulb replacements at that price.
12:35 "People who are anti-maskers"- We didnt forget about the yacht party dude
can you blame him, that yacht was loaded :D
Didn't Canadians allow their prime minister to temporarily freeze the financial assets of protestors? I didn't forget about that.
If they put a "Bane" mode in it, I would buy it
Fr gimme a voice filter and I’m sold
Imagine they add a built in voice filter so you can sound like Bane or Vader or Optimus Prime…
@Jyun Oki They could have hired Tom Hardy for a commercial. Adding modes like Transformer voices would be a neat. BTW my favorite voiceover so far in movies would be agent smith, its the real reason I watched those matrix movies. Also V for vendetta. These strange voice acts are what make big Hollywood movies memorable after all those years.
@Brennan Huff I guess one can try to 3d print it, I mean the front mouth cover and then cut out straps from an old bag or backpack.
@Jyun Oki Vader might not work, vader might work only with a full mask. Personally, I liked Bane more. Was hooked when I first saw it.
I thought of this product as an experimental prototype kind of thing. I mean it's an interesting concept, though kinda useless (or even somewhat detrimental according to Mike) at this stage, but has a potential to lead to something interesting in the future.
During the early 00s I spent the week with the Dyson R&D department, it’s great to see these things come to life all these years later.
I have their Purifier Hot + Cool Formaldehyde. It's less good than a traditional fan, but a traditional fan doesn't purify air at the same time and when it gets a bit colder heats. It's perfect for a smaller room like a bedroom to have it constantly running on night mode. Thanks to the app (and also just smelling) I notice an improvement in air quality.
So yeah, especially their purifiers is a jack of all trades, master of none.
The seal is obviously an issue here, but it only has particulate filtration so you should still be able to smell stuff due to molecules. Also, COVID always travels as part of a bioaerosol which includes microbes, water, and protein.
Also, doesn't Bernoulli's principle apply to this if there's no seal? The localized airflow might generate more airflow over and under the mask.
Props to the person/team in Dyson that was able to present and convince the company board to make this product. The real MVP.
Well it was a nepo baby product. The son off Dyson made these
@entropy. bucket Wow Jake Dyson is also responsible for the Csys lamp series. The guy has an amazingly poor track record.
😂😂😂😂
This is what happens when you got no talent but got a rich daddy. :)
agreed. the only person employable; the sales guy for this
Man you did the ultimate test ,, this is one of the Best reviews I so in my life ,, you covered everything even u had a doctor to say his review on this ,, keep it ( I started following you ) hope to see more and more honest reviews. 💪👍
The fact that Dyson is able to bring this product on the market is actually a sign of how well the company is functioning. And yes, 99,9% of people will say that this is a dumb product, but it’s at least 80% of companies that have become so risk averse that they will never succeed in creating breakthrough products.
Honestly, I love Dyson for being a really good company. They have a lot of really good products and are innovative with their products.
With this headphone though, I really don't know what the target audience is supposed to be. Music-Lovers in an Apocalypse? Cyber Punk DJ Darth Vaders?
I'm not a hater, love your channel, and it's hard to criticize you because you're so good at what you do. It's just the light suspended behind your head…you probably saw it afterwards, but can't stop looking at it. All the love😉
With your perspective and Dr. Mike's perspective on the headphones, it really helped me know more about these headphones, and made it even clearer as to why I and everyone else should not buy them!
How?
Mike just made an assumption about their effectiveness. Just because he's a medical doctor doesn't mean that he knows anything about fluid mechanics.
It's really annoying that people just take other people's words as facts just because they have a Dr. in front of their names or because they are UAclipsrs.
If you have a medical problem ask a medical doctor. If you want to know the effectiveness of an powered air-purifying respirator ask an expert in that field.
@Jehty Very true!
So ready for a Dyson-Escobar collab right now.
Hi rob
🥰
E
Headphones that deliver... "products" directly to your nose?
$1000 + shipping. Wild that they can't just toss in free shipping when you just spend a grand on a small, relatively light thing to ship.
there are better options at that price ..but I think if this was more of a helmet with large clear face shield it might work but would still look weird
My roommate has a Miele vacuum and I can say worlds better than a Dyson he’s had lots of Dyson vacuum’s but they haven’t lasted as long
You gotta seal the entire mouth and nose areas to make the air filtering truly work as the price allows it. I'm not even confident with the magnets as the only hinge/attachment points. It's like they're trying to market the headphones but the air filter and mouthpiece combo is just a bonus afterthought. At this point just make a strap for the back of the head and a sturdy mask in front to balance the overall design and call it IronMask.
It still puts your nasty ass particles out into the people next you, right at eye level.
So Marques is one of the leading influencers that markets this product by supporting the "loss leader" approach. Congrats Marques and thank you for contributing to this world!
Would love to meet the people that came up with the idea, the managers who greenlit the project, and the focus groups that agreed it was a good idea.
Singaporean I’m for sure
I have grudging respect for the person who decided to take noise cancelling headphones and attach tiny white noise machines to them
this need to be pinned.!
I've got minor tinnitus, and that actually sounds pretty sick
Beep bop... I'm the Philosophy Bot. Here, have a quote:
"Whosoever is delighted in solitude is either a wild beast or a god"
~ Aristotle
The zone does have a positive effect on my tinnitus even when I'm not playing any audio through the headphones.
Just as they start talking about loss-leaders, I realise that I am checking the Dyson website for air purifiers. Well played, Dyson.
Fans directly next to your ears is crazy. This will either drain extra battery through ANC, add shitty noise to transparency mode, or push your volume higher increasing risk of noise induced hearing loss or tinnitus. Well played Dyson, I'm talking about it too.... 👏
I feel like they should launch a partner brand if they’re going to start making things like this and the car/lamp etc.
It's refreshing to see a realistic review of this thing, It's just the most ridiculous product I've seen in a long time and I really thought it was some kind of a joke.
Lmao, I still can't believe this product is real.
niye be gülüm?
I had to check if it was April. What a waste of money and time.
@HAYRİ POTUR its just too dumb
es real mi hermano
Hi walter white
Dyson should just re-release the headphones part without the filtration, shiny gloss surfaces (scratch magnet) & as lightweight as possible with the ability to turn on/off noise cancellation & it will sell quick. They should just focus a bit more on the joystick interface (much better than touch), make it more ergonomic & easy to use. Maybe incorporate water proofing as well.
And then make fashionable N95 masks that go well with the headphone in aesthetics & also sell the masks separately.
I'm at the 4 minute mark and you've just explained fairly clearly that Dyson is a motor/filtration company that tends to fail at combining other niches. I think I know how a sound quality/filter product is going to go lol. Ok I got this off my chest, I'll watch the rest now.
I think it actually looks quite cool if you were going for a cyber punk sort of look although the finish on the mask part is such that it lets it down and if it sealed that would be a lot cooler. I can imagine a youtuber wearing this for their videos all the time as part of their brand maybe with some customisation.
The headphone market has gone absolutely bonkers. I'll stick with my plastic $10 on ear Sony headphones I've been using for years. They're super lightweight and have excellent sound quality for such a cheap price.
Having owned a bladeless Dyson for four years because a family member got it for me for Christmas... I hate these products so much. 😂 I got the infamous high-pitch whine that hits like... 98% of their fans, and the only way outside of complete disassembly to "fix" it is to do some heavy percussive maintenance.
That segment with Mike really goes to show why big companies need consultants in multiple fields
And why politicians have no right to dictate any medical procedures
Doctors aren't qualified to talk about masks sadly. Look into Industrial Hygienists then see what the real info on N95s etc is...
I can guarantee you that they have MANY consultants, and they did multiple rounds of testing and focus groups. The problem is not whether or not companies receive the information it is whether or not they deign to accept it. And sadly the people responsible for green lighting ideas live in a bubble of wealth which no amount of information can penetrate. More than likely, this thing is just to get people talking about the brand to hopefully boost sales of their other products.
@Data Dog yeah you nailed it on the head
From the thumbnail, seeing these on a headphone made me think it was some kind of smell-o-vision gimmick. But if they wanted a product that worked, I feel like they should have gone for a filter that rests in the center of the back and pipes to a mask that seals on the face. Then upsell with the headphones as an alternate mounting point for the mask.
The interface and I/O on the headphones seems really nice, though. I wish I could have something like that on my Treks Titanium, which require *both* hands to operate, with a primary button on the left and volume buttons on the right.
This video made me laugh so hard. Props for wearing and testing that out in public.
This is still one of the most cyberpunk products that actually made it to market. It's not like it'd be hard to cut down on pollution in cities, we know where it's coming from...
Edit: Also I think the feature at 16:45 is a bit misleading, ANC doesn't protect your hearing in the same way actually lowering the loudness levels does, so a loud environment with ANC on will still stress your ears and even slightly higher volumes over extended periods can cause hearing damage.
Great video, I thought this was a joke too, didn't realise it was actually for sale...
Regarding the Dyson vacuums, the one without filters are actually bad, the fine dust they throw in the air, and the limited usability, I wish I never bought a Dyson Vacuum cleaner and will never will again. You would be much better off buying a vacuum with a good HEPA filter and pay half, even if you buy extra spare filters so you can wash one filter and use another while it dries.
buy one with a filter, never had a problem with any of my dyson vacuums
The part at the end might be true. The only thing I knew Dyson made before this video, was that vacuum cleaner -- though for all I knew they were bankrupt by now, because I haven't heard that name in like 10 years.
Now I know they still exist and also make other things. So at the very least this is a good product for brand recognition.
Have you been living under a rock?
Because you haven't heard from them in 10 years, they are bankrupt? Wow
Calling Dyson a "weird" company as opposed to unconventional, bold, or daring, was hilarious
By definition, "unconventional, bold, or daring" is called "weird"
I ain't got no respect for Dyson. They make overpriced products, and Mr Dyson himself is a Brexit scam artist.
@GRiM Also a patent troll.
@GRiM Supporting Brexit has nothing to do with this whatsoever
It's such a strange combination to me 😅 people wear headphones in two situations: 1. Gaming/working indoors, where you can put an air purifier for less than 1000,-. 2. Outside while on a walk/jog, or commuting... in the fresh outside air 😅
If it's just a facemask with an air purifier in it, it'd make more sense to me. (If the filtration works both ways of course) that way, you can wear them when you're feeling sick, or when visiting someone who is sick themselves.
I actually like the concept and that they exist. Way too expensive, and it needs some kind of way to create a seal and to get rid of the exhale. But they look way cooler than I excepted.
I would just love to be at the pitch meetings for stuff like this.
"Lets make some good headphones. But how do we make it unique?"
"Air purifier?"
"GENIUS"
Now that you’ve seen the flaws. What do you think they should do to make this better?
I feel a whole series of medical tech being reviewed by Marques and Mike debunking them. I would love that!
For real, both of them are the highest standard UAclipsr in their field
I was like YEAH! Then I went it his page and I heard Hassan Minhaj in my ear whispering “D.Ooooooo. D.Oooo”
@MKBHD consider this
Omg yes please!!
Looks like a hip idea from Mr. Dyson Jr.
During covid i got the Philips fresh air mask (6000), also a mask with an (optional) fan. It really helps getting a bit more air through a mask if you need to run to catch a train for example. Add some seperate headphones and you have a far better product 😅
I like to think this is like a public prototype in order to give ideas to others to what's possible in order to hopefully do a better job , a bit like apple vision pro
I thought it was one of those products that silence your voice so that it doesn't disturb people around you, Never expected it was an air purifier lol
I was wondering how BS these were. Turns out I they're better than I thought they were, which considering my starting point wasn't hard. The app related stuff is super slick though, got to give it to Dyson for that.
I wear headphones and a half-face respirator all the time and I've never wished the two were combined. Solutionism at its finest
For a product that seems to have a ton of work and effort put into it, this is the exact definition of “we were so focused on if we can do this and forgot to ask if we should do this”
Honestly I see that with most of Dyson products since the stick vacs
The crazy part is that some of their prototypes look a whole lot less "dyson", but could easily find a market in the cosplay and "cyber punk" crowd.
The sleek, Dyson-brand design aesthetic kinda ruins this concept by itself in an odd way.
Why Dyson. Why.
You just guaranteed Dyson that this product is a failure😂 Excellent review 💯
Honestly it looks like a cool product. This video was so covid centric but for pollution it's a cool idea. I know it's not a seal but a constant flow of clean air at your nose and mouth can only be a good thing.
first time watching. Great review! Subbed as soon as I saw Michael hahaha. Shame these headphones didn't work out but as soon as I saw the motor directly on the earpiece this is exactly what I thought would happen. Massive design flaw.
I just can’t imagine that a person brought this idea into a room of other people and at least the majority went “yeah that’s a great idea, let’s make it!” 😂
We love a good surprise appearance by Dr Mike!
You stepping out of that bathroom was probably the first time I've laughed out loud at a tech review.
✔ ✔
I was laughing too😂
Sheesh. Even with your spoiler, that scene still funny 🤣🤣🤣
I lost it laughing so hard 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 what we put MKBHD through. That should be on a t-shirt
Awkward
I wonder if there's even more issues caused by the Bernoulli Effect. That is, blowing a concentrated stream of air into a partially enclosed space, while unsealed from the open environment, actually draws air in to that same larger space from the open environment. So while it's blowing a stream of fresh air into the face mask, and while it's unsealed and open to the air around you, seems to me the Bernoulli Effect might end up sucking in air from the air around the outside of the facemask
Actually, if Dyson shifted from this to something like a CPAP machine, that would make more sense
The dyson price tag is justified unlike most brands of anything these days. The engineering and longevity of the dyson vaccuums are unmatched unless you wanna buy an industrial vacuum. I switched between many brands all my vaccuums broke within a year when i saw the dyson vaccuum with the ball on the bottom i was skeptical until i used it at an expo. Had it for years til i got the pighter cordless version
This seems like it's a good experiment for tech with helmets that need active filtration, not so much for making a clean air bubble to breathe in the open.
I might use it on some international flights….which can stink and share germs through air. Thank you for doing this for us!
still can't believe this product is real
Very nice 👍👍
Nice
Good
Nice
Hii
Late to the video. But I gotta say I LOVE this product? Why because it's paving the way with massive mistakes.
The Razer Hazel mask is another good example of a decent idea gone wrong.
There is sadly a very real potential future where we'll want masks 24/7. These flops should help out legit solutions in the future.
Short version: They actually made a product so bad that not only does it NOT do what it claims to do, but it actively makes it WORSE.
It looks like what happened was, they accidentally ordered the wrong size filters for their vacuums from the manufacturer, and they came up with a creative way to recoop their loses and get rid of the problem...
They got the most honest review ever! They should learn from this.
I'm willing to bet the whole reason they made this product was to test out new/potential patents.
Marques is the kind of YT reviewer that actually calls in an actual doctor to check out a product. A+ man xD
I think its gonna become like pawn stars where they call different experts every time as MKBHD ventures into different fields….
@TANISHQ VASHISTHA that'd be awesome actually! 😂👍
The kind of UAclipsr that sell Walmart alike shoes for 3/4 times overpriced?
@Fantasytky lol wutt? 👀
Hmm if it feels heavy to move around with it fumbled with the comfort design. I own a pair of DCA stealths, sure they are slightly less heavy at 420-ish grams or something, but the way they're designed makes them really comfortable to have on and move around in.
On the other hand they are one of the top audiophile closedback headphones out there and need a lot of power and a good Dac and the cable is pretty massive so they aren't really meant to be walked around with
I just saw these and was curious lmao. Thank you for coming through with these obscure tech videos 🤣
It’s funny, you’d think they wouldn’t need to power the filter at all considering gas masks have two similar filters but the fact it doesn’t have a seal, it’s like they said, “Jinkies! We’ll have the air blowing in their mouths!”
And it’s extremely funny!
Would love to see the outtakes of this video, because it’s clearly visible you had to hold back your giggles like a lot 😂
A mind blowing concept: what if Dyson made a large scale tool to CLEAN up the air around the earth so we don’t even need products like this
Why would Dyson make this?
Because in one video they got MKBHD to endorse their Vacuum, their hair dryer, and their fan.
That’s why
total apple move
Why again did they make those $400 PC wheels? Or the $1000 monitor stand?
Exactly my thoughts 😂
see when you put it that way....
Fr lowkey now i wanna but the fan and the vacuum lol
convoluted, but probably correct
This is hard pass. I have LG PuriCare Air Purifier Gen 2 Mask. And while it's expensive (with optional UV charging case & even on sale it costed me over $500) It doesn't make me look (that) weird & it actually works.
Fun fact: Dyson also makes hand dryers that blow particles of water and other goodness around after using the loo!
And maybe run your fan little bit before you use it lmao. "Disgustang!" 😂😂😂
I might think about the Dyson fan as my body for some reason hurts when a fan blows air at it. It's the weirdest thing ever as outside air can blow at any rate and I'm fine, but air from a fan literally hurts me for some unexplainable reason. I wonder if that Dyson fan would fix that as it seems more like a normal flow of air you get outside.
Thats strange, you figure out why?
You didn't mention there was a time when dyson sponsored hundreds of youtubers to review something all on the same day just to raise stock prices AND IT WORKED.
Dyson is a private company wholly owned by the family. They are not listed so do not have stocks or share price.
This is a dystopian nightmare and somehow I still love it
I used to work in Dyson, and before I left the company I was working on this product.
What I can say is, it is the first and very weird collaboration between the UK Dyson Engineering team, Malaysia Dyson Engineering team and China team. We all worked really hard on this product and it really has tonnes of features, but like what this video is suggesting, it creates more problems than it solves
I don’t agree. And I’ve seen plenty of reviews praising it.
So you guys waste all resources on something totally useless !
@TELEVISIBLE well James is rich, and we were still getting paid.
Did the teams consult health professionals while designing this thing? It seems to me more like an engineer's dream than health benefits.
@TELEVISIBLE what a myopic view on the whole Research and Development process - although this product should probably have been killed before deciding to go to market
Imagine if 3 weeks after Dyson released this product there would be a natural disaster in new york where the air quality goes to hell and it actually turns out to be a useful product!
Would be a crazy fever dream
I'm not sure if it's intentional but after seeing this review I really want these. Because they actually make sense, and the counter-arguments are not really there (except the weight maybe). They have this dystopian-future vibe to them.
if i wanted to buy the pair of headphones that made me look the dumbest, i think we have a winner here.
I actually don't think the concept is a bad idea for places with horrific pollution. I lived in Myanmar and the pollution got to me enough that I got an air purifier for my house. I wouldn't get this but it is an innovated idea.
I live in Taipei, not really a high polluted city but if you sit it the office equipped with air purifier and still got PM 2.5 reading 25+ μg/m3, you wouldn't think this product is a bad idea at all.
Literally Dyson could have taken out the filters and made the first generation of their luxury headphones
This is quintessential MKBHD. This is everything the channel stands for. Unbiased review of interesting curios. No matter how good or ridiculous...you will always get the good, bad and the ugly part of the product with extrordinary production value.
Take a bow!
Bopt commen. He is a product reviewer!!!
nice commentary Mr. Hrishikesh Rao, cheers
