My son is 4 years old and is a huge fan of Jimmy Pedro, or sensei Pedro as he calls Jimmy. He's too young to understand how great of a judo competitor Jimmy was, and how great of a judo coach he is. All he knows is that Jimmy is an important person because he's in a couple of big posters around the dojo. But the reason he's such a fan is that every time he sees Jimmy in the dojo and goes say hello, Jimmy stops what he's doing to talk to him. Jimmy is a very good coach, great sensei, and an awesome person.

Jimmy is the biggest reason why my school (St. John's Prep) has a wrestling program. We've only had 2 coaches, Jimmy's dad and Manny Costa, a fellow judoka.

It’s tough my main school only has judo three times a week and the rest I’m having to drive over to other dojo’s we have a relationship with in tampa I’ve even had to start driving across the state 1-2 times a month over to sensei sasaki’s in Orlando it’s hard to find competitive judo in the US

That would be historic. Whether you hate him or like him, Putin can defend himself very well and explain a lot of things that usually you don't hear in the west, and of course, Lex would be THE perfect interviewer. I'm not a fan of Putin, but I know that things are a little more complicated than what we see on CNN or the BBC

Many parents here in the states will push their kids in other sports once they reach their teens in hopes of getting a college scholarship through the NCAA, this is one reason why a lot of teens may not do judo or Brazilian jiu jitsu. There’s a plethora of others, but here in America it’s not uncommon for kids to play baseball all year round once they’re in their early teens.

    • Pavel Chorda
      Pavel Chorda Рік тому

As a former Judoka, above all tecnich, the sensei is the most important, what is he/she transmitting to you, because this person will have a deep impact in your son.
And judo is more than enough to fight anybody and give him strength and self confidence.

    • Nik
      Nik Рік тому +1

@Casey Jordan This has been a fantastic answer! Thanks Casey 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    • Casey Jordan
      Casey Jordan Рік тому +2

Either BJJ or judo is gonna provide a great base (just make sure you find a BJJ school that actually does standup and its just not all groundwork).
The art she/you should ultimately do is the one she will enjoy the most because then she will have fun and stick with it and actually get good at it.
Try out both, she can always switch between them or train both as well.
From a technical aspect just be aware Judo has a steeper learning curve so it may be more frustrating at first, but the ability to put someone on the ground with force and not have to go there is really important for self defense. If she's smaller or not very athletic, BJJ may be better because using the ground to create leverage makes smaller people more effective, but you still have to get on the ground or end up there to use the ground to your advantage.
Aikido is fun but most aikido schools do not pressure test their techniques (ie sparing), do not do any martial art for self defense if they don't spar at force, even if it has good techniques you'll never be able to implement them in a real situation when you have an adrenaline dump if you don't spar, and you also won't have any way to determine what works and doesn't work in various situations and adjust to improve over time.

    • Nik
      Nik Рік тому +1

@Tristan Thanks for your really helpful reply!

    • Tristan
      Tristan Рік тому +1

@Nik if your local dojo is any good they will also practice ne waza and submissions. I'd suggest giving judo a try first because of the ukemi which you don't have in BJJ. Issue with BJJ is it's only ground based, if your strictly talking about self defence that's a bit of a problem, it should be the last place you want to be. Practicing ne waza is very very important but shouldn't be the only thing practiced.
      Forget aikido for self defence.

Judo needs to have various leagues or federations working independently to build the brand of individual judoka. It's all an official federation for a country which is part of the IJF. Capitalism needs to help judo progress. You need better infrastructure. Dedicated buildings everywhere as well as presence in all highschools blending the disciples of physical education with Kano inspired humanities. Judo should be sold as a lifestyle. You can market within that and ethically too. For example incorporate the shoes Sambo players use. Associate with high quality products that build your brand. Another example would be the 02 trainer by Bas Rutten. Things like this are game changers and something everyone should try. Judo bands are another great product doing solo uchikomi at home. You could also encourage competitors to wear mouth guards as this teaches people to nose breathe. You could also have local authorities championing ethical meat sources and eating healthy with a meat producer in that country. Wholefoods. Watson Training Equipment. Charles Poliquin strength training principles. Just associate with the best of the best and keep building your brand of judo as a bigger picture.

One thing that makes Khabib and Islam so dominate is their JUDO. Master of Sports in JUDO for both. And for those wondering, it's not childhood YMCA Judo, it's the Judo that trains you to disable your opponent. The type of JUDO CIA, KGB, trained assasins utilize. Islam has the best leg trips the ufc has ever seen.

The rotational forces of that move discussed at the start of this interview very much remind me of throwing the shot put. A decades long PED enhanced world record in the shot put was finally broken in 2021 by 2x Olympic and world champion Ryan Crouser. Think of the physics behind throwing a 7.26 kilo ball 23.37 m (76 ft 8+1⁄4 in). I’ll bet that that is a discussion many of your viewers would also enjoy. I know I would.
