  • Is the Honda clone just as good as the Honda? Is the Honda better than the Harbor Freight's Predator and Briggs and Stratton Engines? All engines compared for fuel efficiency, oil consumption, noise and vibration during a 48-hour test. Used oil samples sent to an oil testing lab to provide information on wear metals. Engines also compared for torque and horsepower. I bought the engines, fuel to test the engines and all supplies to ensure an unbiased review. So, thank you for supporting the channel.

@WrightsW5 but the clock on expiration date for a patent only starts ticking after the patent is fully accepted and finalized. That's why ou see so many products marked "patent pending ". Keeping the patent status in a pending g state is a loophole to extend the use of patent protection.

@Deucealive75 Honda for Reliability every day!!
I have a Honda mower I pulled from a neighbor’s garbage 10 yrs ago… changed the oil maybe 2 times since then, never put fuel stabilizer in it for winters and it runs like new…
Even been stored outside a few winters…. I just spray a little starter fluid first mow of the year and top off oil if needed…. (Mowing season is short so not a ton of hours on this engine…and the oil still looks nice)
Honda is awesome at making excellent reliable machines…

@Wingnut353 They are ok as a utility engine but I would never use one for the minibike or go kart hobby. There are much better quality engines available for not that much more money. The Predator 224 that came out last year is made by Ducar and is a better quality engine than the 212's.

Long therm the preditors dont' hold up as well as the honda though too much chineseum in there. If you need one for infrequent use and run straight gasoline insted of E10 .... probably will last well enough, my brother put one on a go kart that used to have a wisconsin on it, and it wasn't quite up to the ammount of vibration it had to endure IMO.

2 stroke? I wouldn't even bother with those... not when you can get the sportsman SS1000 on sale every now and them for similar money. It gets branded under other names too but its a full inverter generator... it has a little GX35 clone in it and is pretty darn reliable.

This is by far the best and the most trustworthy comparative test of most of the common products that we all either own or may buy during our lifetimes at least here in the USA. I have followed PF for over 4 years now as well bought many industrial products from simple tools to some big appliances based PF reviews. Every one of them has stood up to the recommendations over that time and I expect they are the best value for every buck I had spent. We all owe a great deal to PF for his unbiased and thorough in-use testing, evaluation and recommendations

Hi Kevin, what about predator’s long term durability? Could be good or (…)
I guess honda could be best value after long-term test.
E.g Ryobi is powerful (price vs Nm etc) but only for weekend jobs not often, otherwise lifetime will be short.. therefore ryobi manufacturer has in portfolio aeg or milwaeukee for small/business.

Fantastic experiment. I can't help but wonder if the 10w-30 had something to do with the oil consumption. Small engines typically use a single weight SAE30 type oil. This is from the Briggs and Stratton website:
SAE 30 - Warmer temperatures, most common oil for small engines.
SAE 10W-30 - Varying temperature range, this grade of oil improves cold-weather starting, but may increase oil consumption.

    • Deucealive75
      Deucealive75 13 днів тому +1

You make a good point here.
In my opinion it depends on how hot the engine is going to run depending on load and outside air temp. If it's 90F outside with no wind and the engine is going to be under heavy load I would use 10W40 or SAE30. If it's 30F out you can get away with much thinner oil.
Honda GX200 and every clone that came after had the recommended oil at 10W30. None of my clones have ever seen thicker than 10W30 and most have been run on 5W30. One of my low use minibike engines I have used 5W20. The spark plug looked good with no evidence of oil consumption.
For my snowblower and minibike engines the oil temp never gets hot enough to use anything thicker than 5W30. I have 5 196's, a 208, and a 224. After a mild build the 224 is a beast and has nearly double the power of the engines in this video.

      Deucealive75 13 днів тому

@Josh B When it comes to these small OHV engines there is no "fan boy" engine that even comes close to the Predator 212. You would agree if you heard all the happy talk I have heard about these for more than a decade. Their only advantages over GX200 and clones are the initial cost and plus 16cc. Otherwise they are a low quality Chinese engine with unique Predator 212 specific parts. They eventually came out with one using a hemi head which took the fan boys to new levels even when there is no power advantage with the hemi head.
They are fine as utility engines but for the minibike and go kart hobby they should be the last choice when there are so many better quality and more powerful engines to start with like Tillotson 212, Ducar 212, BSP 212, and Wildcat 223. The new Predator 224 which is made by Ducar is a better quality engine than any Predator 212. i can use my expensive clone (196) flywheel on any of the above mentioned engines. But it does not fit the unique Predator 212 crankshaft.

Unintentional Failure 29 днів тому +2

@SV Galene yeah you're kinda right about that. A quality made carburator like a Keihin brand will work better than a POS from china. The quality of gas matters too. Ethanol free gas is better for carburators than the standard 10-15% ethanol gas from a gas station, and how long it's been stored matters too. A cheap Chinese carb will junk up after a few days of not being used, a japanese carb on a motorcycle will last months before the gas in the carb gets old.

I would especially like to see conventional vs synthetic and auto engine oil vs small engine oil, made for air cooled engines. Please include the Amsoil signature series, XL, OE and small engine oil see the differences, along with other brands in the requested categories. Thanks

May I suggest two things, for you to consider? #1: Use Avg-Max-Min chart rather than Avg only. #2: be a bit more mindful when (not) to start the Y axis on 0, as sometimes it is misleading (such as in the case of fuel consumption, where the chart shows a huge gap, but in fact the difference is at most 4lbs / 48h, less than 0.1lb / h, or approx 7%)

yep was a good effort but these engines are quick to change... 4 main bolts to hold the engine to chassis and the main drive shaft would be the same diameter for all 4 engines so it would fit generic pumps, generators, and gocarts ... all 4 engines have their own fuel/carby/ignition/exhaust setup already, just have to connect throttle/accelerator cable set-up... probably the fastest type of engine to swap.

The thing not mentioned in the video is that the Briggs used here is nothing more than a Chinese engine with Briggs badging. It's no better than the "GX160" clone used here and there is a chance that it is made in the same Chinese factory that the GX160 came from.
The Predator 212 has always had the advantage of cost and 16 extra cc's over the 196cc GX200.

I always subscribe to the notion that price is relative to what you get and in this instance, I too would spend the extra to get the Honda. There SHOULD always be a reason that a product costs more and this testing goes to prove that Honda has invested heavily into the engineering of the product.

Hey Project Farm, I have a video suggestion. Could you create tests comparing the lethality of kickback for gas chainsaws vs electric chainsaws with the chain breaks disabled. Or maybe just the potential for injury based on how long it takes for the chain to stop spinning after letting go of the throttle.
I have a feeling electric saws stop sooner but I think it might be an interesting video. I had a friend get injured from a gas saw and ever since I been thinking maybe it was the wrong tool for the job. If not I appreciate the chainsaw testing content you’ve put out. • Chris Christenson

@Deucealive75 All non-B&S motors with this footprint were designed to replace the original (older) B&S motors... The motors were changed to OHV design because of the need to meet EPA emission standards, not because of a superior design. The OHV design adds more parts and complexity and the Honda is not some new radical design of a small 4-stroke motor. You will also see the change to a hemi-head only to meet stricter EPA standards. Honda's are a good motors because of the quality of their builds. B&S now is not the same company it was, thus they now follow the current leader.

    • Deucealive75
      Deucealive75 13 днів тому

@Chris Christenson The OHV Honda GX200 has nothing to do with any Briggs engine. The Briggs engine in this video is a cheap Chinese big bore (70mm) clone with Briggs badging. Who's copying who? If Honda copied anything it was the standard footprint (bolt pattern) of the Briggs.

    • Jim James
      Jim James Місяць тому +1

@Chris Christenson well yes, they did use the same generic 4 bolt mounting pattern (and crank pto height for that matter) otherwise they wouldn’t fit to the implements they’re designed to power. We’re talking about a universal powerplant here. But then already being constrained to these superficial constraints saves very little in terms of RnD. They’re simply constraints that have to be designed around.
The slant OHV was a clean sheet design that owes little to the competition before, and was good enough for B&S to rip off 15 years later when the side valve engines they were persisting with just weren’t cutting it in the 21st century.

    • Chris Christenson
      Chris Christenson Місяць тому

@Jim James Honda did not do a radical ground up engine unique design, that's why you can have all these clones and knock-offs without patent infringements, as they all utilized the same mounting holes and the 4-bolt pattern where the accessories bolt up to which were based off of earlier B&S. The reason the Honda motors have become the comparison leader is because of the quality of the parts and the tighter specifications... and many manufactures went with the Hemi Head and tamper proof carbs to burn cleaner and meet EPA requirements... also it was in the early 90's that that Honda started to copy Harley Davidsons...

    • Jim James
      Jim James Місяць тому

@Chris Christenson that’s cool and all, but nothing that B&S or Tecumseh were making had anything to do with the slant OHV design that almost every single stationary engine manufacturer has copies today. The only thing in common there is some arbitrary cylinder count which does nothing to save on RnD cost.
Heck, if you’re going to pull that card then the Chevrolet Small Block is a rip off of the flat head Ford (which it isn’t)

He bought the winner of the test instead of his original pick. 😉 There's also one more subscriber to this channel after that.

Lot of knowhow in devising these tests and making it interesting. I love it

Heck, I don't even know what a quarter of things sometimes are used for. I still watch. That's how you learn.

Todd, thanks for doing a very involved "Test" of these engines.
I would definitely buy the Predator for the cost savings.

Love your videos! I’m a plaster contractor. Sometimes I’m asked to do trim work but I hate lugging around my compressor, hose and nail gun. How about a cordless 18 gauge brad nailer. Dewalt, ryobi, Bauer, etc…? Thanks for your excellent content!
