Hello friends! Captions are out for transcription and should be up later tonight! :)
ALSO: Please be on the lookout for a ding-dang scammer in the comment section. I'm not hosting any kind of giveway on 'telegram' or would EVER ask you for money so please report them if you see them! THANK YOU LOVE YOU
I hate having to wait for the captions, because I always want to watch your videos as soon as they come out, but I *truly* thank you for putting captions on your videos so I (and others) can fully enjoy your content!
Totally gonna watch Muppet Treasure Island. Thank you so much Rach for being a bright spot in my day. Your quirks and personality always bring a smile to my face. Also love the chair great work!👍
this could not have been more perfect i was just thinking of doing similar to my gaming chair!!! ty
Thank you for immediately telling us that they will be up later. I really appreciate it, even though this means I have to wait to watch your video.
❤ Hello Rachel ❤
If you do end up deciding to redo the epoxy sculpt parts may I make a suggestion? I think the design would look more "complete" or "cohesive" if the wood headrest went down all the way to the seat instead of only floating on the headrest. Mind you I am thinking about the Pinterest examples you showed us while making this suggestion so I hope you do not mind my suggestion.
I really appreciate you doing this project and showing us how you did it because I plan to do my chair now using the pattern making idea you did. I have been struggling with ideas of how to redo my chair fabric and you have shown me a way that is easier/less expensive for me. Thank you again for your inspiration from a long time subscriber.
Another episode of Rachel little by little turning her house into the Shire, with a wifi connection.
Is that not what we all secretly (or loudly) crave?
You know hobbits would be all about that Netflix and Chill! In the entirely uneuphemistic sense
Not having the WiFi is why the Entwives left.
I agree Nikki
And also prime delivery is all i want 😂
She is so incredibly talented, but I spent the whole video thinking "You can take the chair apart! It unscrews!!"
That's what I was thinking! All that would work so much easier if Nick just took it apart!
Yeah Nick! Help a girl out!
Ugggggggggh RIGHT?! I was all "You can get that seat cover to fit perfectly if you just. pull it. apart. Alan key or screwdriver and you're off! Actually, my seat desperately needs recovering and I feel like now I've been given a challenge. I'll definitely take the seat apart to do it though 🤣🤣
Having just bought a Secret Lab chair and put it together a couple of months ago, I was painfully aware of all the different pieces.
See, I watched this on my roku just after getting up for the morning, and my thought was "is there some way to chop block the wheels so they don't roll?" 😂
"Someone will find it 40 years from now in a thrift store and think; what is this monstrosity?" - I love those moments, so, win-win. 😅
Am I the only one that, in video cover from the way it’s blurred up, thought for a second that the chair was Dubious Food? 😂😂😅
Rachel: I'm gonna put on a mask because I don't want to breathe in foam dust
Also Rachel: *paws the epoxy goop with bare hands, rubs hands near eyes*
It's not an exaggeration to say I nearly screamed watching her do that 🥲
Yeah I'm regularly concerned about her lack of safety especially PPE
that part killed me 😭
Also I think she just used a bandana?? Oh god
She's not just using epoxy, she's using *Apoxie Sculpt* - it's designed for this. She wears gloves for all the mixing and kneading, she's doing fine, y'all
Honestly, when I was bingewatching your videos during Quarantine, you made me realize "wow, I could work in a craft store..." and now I've been at Joann Fabrics for two and half years 😂 Thank you for awakening a dream in me that I didn't realize I had, I love it there
hahahaholy crap, that's awesome!! Congratulations !
If you have to hand sew on any furniture again, try using a curved needle, it makes a WORLD of difference. I found one in my sewing stash and thought “weird” until I actually needed an upholstery needle to use on my couch.
Yassss, I have a curved one called "matras needle" from a set from the triftstore. Never needed it yet but I just know that one day it will be my salvation 😂
Agreed. I actually bought a set because I got a tear in my blazer's driver seat and even though it was the side where very few people would see, I knew it was there and I needed to fix it
This!
It really makes a big difference!
Ohhhh that's what those are for. Makes so much sense
I love that Rachel has a real cat, and chose to CGI one into the bit anyway. Because we know doing all the work to add one in post is easier than getting a live cat to cooperate. 😂
I mean yea, cooperative cats are rare
Binx definitely would have a very limited tolerance for those shenanigans.
One of the main rules of entertainment: never work with children or animals.
wait whaaatt?? i didnt see it :(
This is the first thing I thought when that CGI cat popped up! 😂😂😂
as someone with an utter lack of a ‘good enough gene’ (which means I’m never truly satisfied with anything I do and often struggle even attempting something because I know perfection is not attainable), I’m in complete awe of how fearlessly you delve into new things.
I know for a fact I would’ve brought out the kitchen scales to measure that epoxy, but you’d probably make 10 new things in the time I spent carefully considering the best way to start doing 1. it’s like.. balance in the universe, y’know?
I feel you!
I'm also the type of person who does things slowly but tried to make them as perfect as possible.
I would probably have tried to dab on some hardener on the gum-like parts if I had noticed that they didn't harden well.
I also struggle with good enough and starting without perfectly planning things. I love watching Rachel to encourage me to just go try something!
I honestly think someone would have a million dollar idea if they could make comfy aesthetic computer chairs in themes like this.
This actually gave me the motivation I needed to go and mend a hole in my car seat with some flowery fabric, that I've never had the courage to do before because "if no one ever did it, maybe there's a reason and you can't do it for said reason, even if I still can't come up with what that reason could be". Basically, you teach me with every video that if you can think of it, you can do it.
I have seen people sew on embroidery patches over cat scratched furniture ..looks so cool for those of us who can not do it for reals
i was thinking of something similar for my recliner that i was donated! glad to see that there's more of us being inspired!
I love it!!
this is her most cursed creation yet and it brings me so much joy because this is 100% categorically, unequivocally something I would see in the thrift store and just stare at, dumbstruck with awe and wonder because what the actual hell is that... Rachel is king for always coming through with those bumfuzzlingly magical creations.
I really appreciate it when you analyze what you could have done better and why. It helps us learn as you learn. Those no shame in mistakes, especially if you can learn from them.
"EVERY DEFECT GETS RESPECT." ~Laura Kampf
Rachel's new words of wisdom really speak to me, "bad planners can't be choosers."
I think that needs to be a merch line
Can I be a chooser if I'm really good at planning, just trash at sticking to them?
@Tawny I need that sticker for my sewing case...
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
I feel this in the very depths of my soul 😅
I actually thought she would combine the corduroy with the lighter flowery fabric.
But then again, the other corduroy also looks really nice.
I am just working on an underskirt where I had a similar problem (have been felling seams while watching this video): I've sewn a skirt out of a weirdly cut tunic style shirt that an elderly woman gave me, and decided it needed an underskirt for a variety of reasons.
Then I found a piece of linen-viscose mix in the bargain bin at the department store and it was the right weight and type of fabric to go well with the skirt. I thought it was just enough for an underskirt, so I bought it.
While cutting out the pieces I realized that it was just short of enough, and then I also made a stupid mistake and cut some pieces wrongly.
So I took another, coarser linen and made the back part of the underskirt out of that, but also cut that shorter and attached a wide band of the finer fabric to it. So, you will only see the good fabric peeking out from under the skirt and nobody will know it is a mix. ^ ^
I can even justify it by saying I made the part you're sitting on from a sturdier fabric and one that also doesn't yellow because it's already unbleached. Lol.
Anyway, I have to make a whole bunch more seams now because the back is all pieced together.
I had to laugh when you were talking about the carved wooden details, but not, like on Victorian furniture. It's not usually wood on Victorian furniture either, so you're probably closer than you think! Those details are usually made out of a substance called compo/composite, and if you look for "composition ornaments" you can actually buy modern replicas for not too much. They're steamed for a short time, which makes them flexible, and activates the glue that helps form them, and put into place. Then they would be stained or gilded appropriately, and you'd never know they weren't actual wood. Useful stuff, if you have a need for fanciness but no sculpting skills!
You inspired me to give the living room a makeover into a medieval lady's solar and musical conservatory, and my office into a steampunk study. Make the Whimsy you wish to see in your world!
The "working out what the chair does" song is quite honestly the most perfect song I have ever heard
“Lookin’ like an alien who’s never seen a ****ing chair before” 🎵
Such a hidden jem, that one😆
I love watching Rachel terraforming her entire house.
I feel like if we give it a couple of years Rachel will turn her entire house into this whimsical fantasy hut and will start selling tickets for people to come and have a stroll inside :) :D
Lol she is definitely on her way to being the eccentric old lady with the house to match who would do that
I feel like you've unlocked a gaming chair niche that desperately needs to become more common. Victorian gaming chairs ⭐
This plus nerdforge's custom pc's
and really most modern objects, there's needs to be more diversity. Some things are just so boring.
@Alice the arts and crafts movement people are just shaking their heads disappointingly from their lushly decorated graves because "we" let industry get to the same point AGAIN
absolutely! Mechanical keyboards have their niche but custom gaming chairs?! amazeballs
I really appreciate that you discussed your failings in a project because so many people don't and it gives people unrealistic expectations. I know it's not a great feeling when something you really love and worked hard on doesn't come out or quite work the way you wanted, but I thank you for sharing. Also, cut yourself some slack! As you said, it was your first time ever working with that material!!! I feel like anyone could and probably has mad that mistake. You're human. It's okay. It looks great and you learned from it and that's what truly matters.
Not me wanting Rachel to make a dress like Evelyn Hugo's just to see how her craftsmanship would make it look so fabulous.....
Thank you for going hard on all your projects but especially the more off-beat ones like this. It was very entertaining and exactly what I needed to help me sew a pile of motifs together for a dress. You're one of my favorite channels.
I watched this when my husband was sitting next to me… just so I could see his anguish as Rachel went to town on that Secret Lab chair. 😂
😁😁
I mean she did dramatically shorten the life of a 500 dollar chair for views.
@Tadhg McGrath You must be new here; she chooses her projects for herself (like, even when they're not going to get very many views and she knows it). And that was already a heavily used chair dude
I would’ve gone for more Steam punk vibes. Twill fabric and gold, bronze, or mat silver gear details, with wood veneer or flexible plywood to blend the modern functionality with the ornate of Victorian ascetic.
Me: side eyes our gray, ergonomic desk chair from across the room
My husband: "Please, no."
😂
Same
DO IT ! ;)
Grounds for divorce. Who needs that kind of negativity 😂
Real talk, the duct tape dress form applied to upholstery is INSPIRED!!!
I literally felt the same way about my inherited desk chair and just got green velvet seat covers for it. 😂 The bar is now much higher
Rachel was on fire this episode with all the segments and comedic tangents.
I love how you are unafraid to just do things nobody has ever done before. And in defense of the clay mixing, you are literally the FIRST person(myself included) I've seen actually listen to the warning and wear gloves to use Apoxy Sculpt lol
I'm so glad someone finally addressed that gaming (and desk) chairs need more variety/ beauty! I'm always wondering where the pastels and organic tones are. Why can't they be cozy, beautiful, AND ergonomic? I love that you didn't let it hold you back and you just went and made one! 👏
as fun as it is watching professionals make stuff, it's also really fun watching an artist just fuck around and finding out and you fill that void for me big time thank you
I honestly learn so much from watching Rachel fuck around and find out how *not* to do things
@PetLoverSpy M. Same! It's very enjoyable, and it motivates me to try new things! I got into needle felting recently just because I watched her do it and I got obsessed aha
@Melynn Rose me too, she’s one of the people who got me back into sewing
Actually do agree!!! It can be fun to experiment and it’s nice to see someone fail, learn, and try again because that’s how it really is (cliche lol)
"Looking like an alien who's never seen a chair before" had me literally cackling and rolling on the floor I love you.
I'm honestly just so happy someone else recognizes the absolute masterpiece of cinema that is Muppet Treasure Island! Cannot stress how much I love that movie, not to mention that beautiful chair!!!!
Can I just say, you give us all the courage to just “jump in” head first to a project? Love your channel!
Also, (cuz I forgot to add), I half expected you to make a steam punk chair after you talked about all the gizmos on the chair.
I started laughing hysterically at your “Crumbs and Cat Hair” cafe name and my dog ran over to me and started sniffing and nuzzling me intensely, wanting to play, lol. Your content, the way your mind works, just brings me joy 😂
Shoot, now I am looking at my old office chair with ripped fabric and my brain is arguing with itself that I absolutely need to whimsify it while knowing perfectly well that I don't have the experience nor the tools like Rachel to make it happen😂
that $600 gaming chair deserves this makeover and i'm not afraid to say it
Honestly, the grey AINT it.🤢 my boyfriend has one that’s black and white with some gaming teams logo on it, luckily it’s an eye that looks cool
Especially when, on average, gaming chairs aren’t actually that comfortable vs a same priced ergonomic office chair. Might as well beautify the thing.
Yeah I have a second hand gaming chair that is a boring black and really just not cute at all and I might just try my hand at crocheting a back cover for it (the seat is fine since it is under the desk when not in use anyway)
Never stop being a crafty Hobbit weirdo! Your adventures bring me so much joy! I get very “Well if she can do it…..so can I!” feels when I watch you! ❤
I use apoxie sculpt all the time for fossil restoration! It's pretty normal to not end up with evenly used tubs despite best efforts. If sculptures don't cure in eight hours or more (cold temps can slow it down) you should redo it. You can also gently microwave the a and b side separately and it makes mixing waaayy easier and speeds up curing time! Good luck!
Cool!
Oh my god your outfits in this video was amazing especially the black corset-looking shirt and the brownish long skirt! If you remember where you got those please say because it was SO CUTE gave me massive “modern renaissance” vibes. Does that make sense? I don’t know but it fit you so well and looked amazing. Love your content :) inspires me to whimsify more of my own stuff too!
I always appreciate honesty when things don't go as planned. And Muppet Treasure Island is FIRE!
Came for the chair and aesthetic ✨stayed for the personality subscribed for the Taking Back Sunday blooper 💖
Hey! Your chair turned out pretty great, considering it was your first time redoing a chair! You learned quite a bit while working on your chair, Rachel. That is a good thing! ~Janet in Canada
Felt that with the French knots. I've found keeping tension the whole time helps, but honestly I have a scrap piece of fabric that I practice everytime I need to remember that stitch 😅
Word - I learned embroidery ages ago and still remember all the stitches but French knots. Nope my brain just refuses to hold onto that.
I feel you on wanting your furniture to be more whimsical! If I could afford to, all my furniture would be curved rococo monstrosities. Instead I have a mix of IKEA and thrift store finds. 😩
rachel is genuinely so skilled and talented with crafting stuff and sewing. i can only dream of making the things she does
Three of the best Disney movies.
I'd not be able to get past Love Led Us Here without stopping to put on a performance for my dogs.
I listened to that song soooo many times 💚
As someone who is practical to the point of boring at times, I deeply appreciate your whimsy and the way you decorate all the things around you. It reminds me not everything HAS to be practical to have value.
Is IS practical if it makes you happy!
The fact that you did this without taking the chair apart is amazing
The day is always better when Rachel posts
This is giving me so much inspiration for my future apartment/home while also letting me living vicariously until I get there. Also, Robin eggs are indeed superior 👌
You are your hardest critic, we all love and cherish your work more than you could ever imagine! I've been watching your channel since it's early days and you never fail to inspire me to try new things and just "go for it", the little perfectionist in me makes me freeze up before I do something new, but you've helped inspire me to push my self to create things I never thought I was capable of🥰 Love the community you've built here and the work you do, you're a gem❤
This is beyond impressive I’m convinced she can do anything
Someone definitely needs to start of business of supporting and comfortable office chairs that also look like haunted Victorian chairs
The "gamer" aesthetic has dominated the ergonomic chair market for too long! And it's totally out of fashion anyway!
Yes!!! I would genuinely buy one.
And the ergonomic gamer chairs ARENT EVEN ERGONOMIC 😭
@Heather M Wait, really? How can I tell if a chair is ergonomic? I have a gaming chair (for my back, I am not a gamer), but I can't say I love the way it looks. I was thinking about searching other ergonomic chairs but don't really know how, on what sites or with what keywords.
You will never cease to surprise me and I adore you for that ❤
for the gummy spots, paint on UV resin and seal. I hate working with Epoxy sculpt becasue of the need to be so accurate. but the uv resin will help. Pro tip, no uv lamp will beat 30 mins in the sun if you have the weather for it
Your enthusiasm and dedication to maintaining whimsy throughout your home is something I can only hope to aspire to.
My husband has one of those monstrosities and I've always wondered how to make it look more harmonious with all the antique furniture in our home!
That said, I've singlehandedly renovated a bathroom from top to bottom, and the scope of this project STILL makes my palms sweaty. You're brave. ❤
Rachel, you have one of the most creative and resourceful minds I have ever come across. Your knowledge of crafts techniques and your skills at applying them are amazing. That embroidery piece is so lovely, and those faux wood details just blow my mind. Chef’s kiss to this project.
My very favorite thing about Rachel is that she is always doing things that your "civilized" brain is trained to think you shouldn't/can't do. She just waves that thought away and does shit in the name of WHIMSY. And honestly, even if things don't go 100% right, that shit right there is what I need.
Thank you Rachel, for always Doin it for the Whimsy. You inspire and encourage this burned out maker and remind folk that you can just do shit, for funsies.
I bought a green velvet swivel chair because I was so mad at my previous gaming-aesthetic one for ruining the vibe of my Victorian explorers living room. I thought the itch was scratched, but I'm now itching to throw on some embroidery and a wood-effect (topper? crest? idk)
This scratches an itch I didn't know I had, incredible ✨content✨ I think that chair is adorable, I might have to do something similar when I eventually get enough space to actually have a desk
Rachel, I feel like you and me share a wave length sometimes;
I have literally been thi king about wtf I should do with my office chair because it doesn't fit my aesthetic. And seeing this and seeing what's in my capabilities has given me so many ideas, so thank you!!
Smol tip for the apoxie sculpt from someone who has been on the doll making battlefield with it, try mixing it in small batches! It'll be easier to knead and you will have an easier time seeing if all of it is mixed together enough. It seems like it would take more time but it actually saves you a lot of time and finger strain! I love how the chair came out, I'm going to go add fake woodgrain to all my belongings now
I was gulping down the last of my tea when you do the sing-song at the beginning, and I had to try not to laugh, choke and spit out my tea when you sang "like an alien that's never seen a *=£÷ing chair"😂😂😂😂😂
I usually add a touch of black acrylic paint to my apoxie sculpt. Not only does it darken it but also a great indicator of when it's fully mixed.
Oh that’s smart! Thanks for the tip!
Love this tip!
This looks great! Really love when artists show the trial and error that goes into their projects and how they overcome problems creatively. Keep up the work ^^
That little 'looking at the chair' song is actually the most terrific song I've ever heard!! What a bally bop!! Absolutely spiffing, if you will!!
This was honestly just a labor of love
I love that not everything you make is perfect, it gives me courage to just start a project and have fun ❤
Don't know if this would apply to epoxy sculpt, but I use a food scale to measure out my silicone putty that's two parts. Keep up what you're doing, love every minute of it.😊
Yay, Editing Rachel usually gets asked for things rather than asked what she wants, as Lizzo says “it’s about damn time!”
Next up: a frame for the computer screen to make it like a magic mirror ✨
YES! Great idea!
MATE YES
I LOVE this idea!!
Then need to figure out how to "upgrade" the keyboard and mouse ascetics after.
I really hope she sees your comment!!
YESSSS
I can't say how awesome I find this and how this is just one of the most creative and genius things I've seen. LOVE!
I am always amaze with people with so much creativity as you!
Rachel, I've really been enjoying your editing lately! It flows so nicely
hi, just wanted to say thank you for always putting a smile on my face and making me feel better. i was overwhelmed and crying because im about to take my teaching certification test later today and i put this on to calm down and i instantly felt better. you make the world a happier and cozier place, thank you so much.
calculating the yardage had me weak 😂 that's so accurate
I never thought i would want a whimsical gaming chair. Now I want a whimsical gaming chair.
Looking at this and thinking of all the hope that will be making their game chairs wonderful instead of going for the fancy brands that tell everyone they have made it. It will be a new era for gaming nerdiness.
I covered my office chair in pink and olive gold damask cut velvet jacquard. Best decision ever.
If you put on a good audio book, epic podcast, or playlist, the struggley bits feel more like a puzzle and less like "Why did I do this?!"
they need to sell these, not everyone lives a cyberpunk life
I've always wanted one and now it simply must happen. My current gaming chair is kind of like mesh so my immediate thought was some kind of embroidery on it all over. Like that plastic mesh grandma covers tissue boxes with.
Rachael is everything I want to be if I had ANY talents whatsoever.
This is such crazy timing because I've been staring at my office chair for weeks upset over its lack of *whimsy* ... thanks for the idea!!!
The editing and puns in this is *chef kiss* 👩🏻🍳 it made my day. Thank you ❤
Love it! And you made me roar with laughter several times, so much so that I scared the cat! I also admire and appreciate the strength you have to maintain transparency when things go ... not so well. It makes me feel less lonely, as I mess up yet another project I have winged. Can hardly wait for the next one.
"Bad planners can't be choosers", that one hit me too damn hard
Rachel is so incredibly masterful with all of her projects and yet so chaotic. I’ve never seen such a perfect blend of artistry and chaos and I’m here for it.🤣❤️
Same I love it
When using the Apoxie products, wetting your fingers or hands helps the kneading process. Usually you kneed to knead for a good minute to mix thoroughly.
I just thought it might be helpful to say I've worked with Apoxie sculpt a lot and it really helps to wear thicker plastic gloves - the type you would use for washing dishes - to knead part a and b together. They still stick like the latex gloves do, but it's less of an issue because they're thicker and sturdier.
Never expected to be watching this type of content, but you honestly inspire me so so much to beautify my life and make it my own. I loved this beyond much, and it turned out absolutely fantastic!
I loved this video so much for some reason! Watching you make an idea come to life is super inspiring and makes me excited to do creative things. I get so many ideas from your videos (this one was really informative for me). Thanks so much as always Rachel
Robin’s Eggs are the superior choice!
Also, this gave me the inspiration I’ve needed to work on my very unaesthetic work chair in my office.
Staring at my own Secret Lab chair knowing exactly how much it cost.... I need more wHiMsY 🤩
Dude, the embroidery on the chair and the shine of the embroidery are stellar. It looks so good. Honestly, it's amazing and I'm so sorry the epoxy didn't work out just right. That really sucks.
The freehand embroidery on corduroy was legit impressive. I’ve tried doing similar things and that shit is hard. It came out lovely!
You are an inspiration and a delight and I love how you just plan it out, jump in and create magic. Thank you so much for your videos.
I turned this on in a desperate attempt to stop my brain from melting at work and it saved me. I giggled SO MUCH. Thank you
that chair needed that makeover desperately i loved it
How dare you make this look so good and make me realize I have materials to do this to my gaming chair? MA'AM
I love it, feels kinda like it belongs in Over the Garden Wall. Feel like it’ll feel more whimsy if you added a dry brush of gold or gold glitter
Did this video inspire me to give my husbands wheelchair a makeover? YES
Will I postpone that idea indefinitely because I’m afraid of ruining the one thing he needs to get around? Also yes.
oooh very interesting I hope you do get to it and it goes well
Victorian looking but with modern tech: awesome. Maybe try to make it removable, in case it goes wrong or isn't always adapted to the situation (thinking about going through airport security, for example)?
Dooo iiiit! I'm on my 2nd power chair. I took the makeover leap with my first and it came out brilliantly. Go for it!!
STEAMPUNK PLEASE
@Kristen A I fully support this
Rachel, you make me smile the whole time I'm watching you 😊
You have grown so much since I started watching you doing vintage hair styles you seemed so shy and now to see you shine it's wonderful.
Your channel is a breath of fresh air. Can't wait to see what you do next. ❤
I absolutely love how crafty you are and that you're showing it more. You're absolutely and inspiration for me. I wish I could afford to own a place of my own so I could try some of the things that you have, I love this stuff so much. ❤
i love watching you do all of these projects it's inspirational and always makes me wanna get crafty. just trying to save up the money for it sobs
